Hey everyone! I'm new as of tonight. I'm hoping this could help me with my computer problems. I am having MAJOR spyware problems. Mostly with "updmgr." Our spyware detector keeps removing it but it keeps coming back no matter what I do and I went on a website and it gave me a whole long list of files to delete and such. Anyone else having a problem with that specific spyware or at least know something about it that can help me get rid of it? Also, since I'm new I'm not sure where to post certain things... I know you aren't supposed to ask all kinds of questions and such in this forum, at least that is what the big box with bold letters is telling me. It says to post them in the appropriate forum, but I'm not really sure which that would be so could someone help me out with that? Pretty much all I wanna know is if anyone has any idea what "ovrimib" is and if it is a threat to my computer. I typed it into a google search and it found nothing so I'm not really sure about it. It recently showed up. Anyway, if anyone can help me with this or direct me to someplace that can I would really appreciate it! THANKS!
phawgg
the girl, updmgr. need to be taken off your PC. Carefully, with others, too. Please follow these directions to help us to help you. We use a program that shows us likely places bad files exist, and from it we can guide you through the steps needed to clean your machine.

First create a new folder. A folder like c:\HJT. You can do it in about seven clicks(-->). Use your desktop -->StartButton-->My Computer-->Hard Disk Drive C:\-->File-->New-->Folder and name it HJT.

Next download HijackThis from: HijackThis Download Site. You should "save to disk".
Open the .zip folder and choose extract. Use the 'browse" and extract to the C:\HJT folder you made.
Doing it this way will let you use the backup/restore features that we may need later on.
Now, with the unzipped folder open, (double)click the icon hijackthis.exe to Run the program.
Next click on the Scan button and when it is finished click on the same button, which is now called Save Log.
A Notepad window will open with the contents of this log. Use the notepad toolbar --> Edit --> Select all --> Edit --> Copy.
The log will be saved until you right-click again.

Create a reply to this post by clicking "new topic button" at this link location. Right click in message area and select "paste" to paste the log into the post. When you see the log, then type in your comments to us about your particular problem. Please be patient with us, we are volunteers. We need time to study your individual log before we recommend doing a "fix procedure". Thanks for your cooperation. smile.gif

Someone will reply to you after reading this post. DO NOT fix any entries unless you understand what you are doing.
To see a tutorial with screenshots on using HijackThis you can click on the link below:

Hello, I am new to this site, and a fellow chat mate headed me to this area, because I am having trouble with my Internet Exployer.. But thanks, and I know this is not the place to let you know the troubles, so have a Happy Holidays.. tyvm Dawn

I am new and just want to get on the board. Maybe this will make it. If so, will some one who feels like talking answer. I would like someone to tell me how to manuever around this site. I am having computer problems and would like to know how to get to the forum where I can talk about that. Thanks ohmy.gif
phawgg
Hi, George. I've been in your shoes. smile.gif The problems we discuss here fall into different categories.
  • Hardware related
  • windows operating system problems
  • Security...malware related
  • Having to do with a particular program or application software
To name a few. The "Discussion Board" shows you the various sections where individual forums are grouped together when you scroll down the page. Any time you are anywhere, look to the typed line that says: BleepingComputer.com and click on it to get you back to the main discussion board "index". When you are in another section, this line will have additional words next to it.

Anything underlined will give you a new page (99% of the time) as they are hyperlinks.

Pages are the same way. Say you click-on and open "hijackThis logs analysis". Scroll to near the bottom & you'll see pages. Click 'em and navigate. Best advice is to pay attention to what individual posts are about (predominately) in any section and see if it's like your problem.

Hope this helps. Post again after experimenting a bit. It doesn't always come easy from my experience. mellow.gif

You can also try opening more than one browser window so you don't limit yourself to one page at a time if that might help.

Hi every one, I'm new to this site. I've called my computer lots of things including
bleeping when the kids are around. I can operate it well enough when its running properly, but as soon as something ( virus ) gets in I have trouble getting rid of it.
We usually take it in and they erase everything and start over, I'm wondering if anyone knows how I can do that myself at home, just erase everything and reload all the programs........................Thanks.............ED
jgweed
Viruses are nasty critters, but most of these can be gotten rid of by use of a resident Antivirus with updated definitions; reformating is an extreme measure to take for just one instance of a virus, especially considering you also have to reinstall many applications and re-update Windows each time.

You might want to begin by reading some of the tutorials dealing with basic computer security; these provide general concepts and some of them deal with specific applications designed to rid your computer of adware.

If you have any problem ridding yourself of a virus, help is just a post away here at BC.
Regards,
John

Hi everyone, found this site to be very useful when I came across a particularly nasty problem (CWS SWAPX) and the comprehensive instructions here led to a successful conclusion. Thanks. thumbup.gif

I just wanted to take the time to thank everyone at BC . I have tried many tech sites but have never received the help I have found here . It is always warm and friendly and well staffed . If the pay per fee sites were this helpful they would be worth every penny . BC Staff have never been stumped . I have always found the answer right here . Income Tax should be in soon and I will do my part . Not because I have to but because it's the right thing to do .

Thanks All , acklan (John Braud)

Hello everyone. I'm new to the site as well, unfortunately it is out of necessity instead of wanting to expand my computer knowledge just for the heck of it... But, I have a feeling if the site is as good as the members say it is (oh I hope I hope I hope lmfao.gif ) then I'm sure I'll be back here often.
OkieBert
Ok I hope this is where we reply. They could make it a little clearer for us.

Your dealing with people's computer problems?
and you're having FUN! crazy.gif

No, no, no it's not supposed to work like that. Oh what the heck!

Hi! I'm Rimmer. thumbup.gif

Oops, do you want newbie's intro's here as a reply to your post, Scarlett, or should I have made a new topic?

Geez, here two minutes and I've already made mistakes!
Scarlett
Well actually the intended purpose of this thread was to help new members navigate thier way around Bleeping Computer. I thought that maybe some would post questions and or comments.

Some of you all stop in and say hello. Which is quite fine with me. w00t.gif

Although it is much more personal if everyone starts their own introduction thread. wink.gif

Hi all

very new, but googled up your tutorials and went on a spyware cleaning spree. tongue.gif Was impressed and joined.

However, still fighting the good fight against Yupsearch! which keeps popping no matter how many times I run Spybot. Looking forward to meeting you all! smile.gif

Mod Edit: I will be splitting this off to the AntiVirus, Firewall and Privacy Products and Protection Methods Forum

My apoligies. I have since noticed that you have already posted an HJT Log.

Hello Everyone:
Problems with a computer, hmmmmmmmm me?
Well I am a real problem child with computers but
I bet I drive it as crazy as it drives me. I just love seeking out
free things and trying them out. The next thing you know I am
slowed down to a crawl. Then the next step for me is usually using my
systems tools CD. I really get myselfe into a pickle. Once I couldn't even get my computer to stay on long enough for me to get to do anything.
I will probably either keep you laughing or become a real pain in your butts. Anyway it's nice to be here thumbup.gif

supersquaw
well this is probably going to be waaay back in the list, but so far my bleeping computer experience has been bleeping fantastic. ive got all my computer problems fixed in the first shot unlike microsofts "help" forums which are pretty much a list of things that at most might work but usually don't. lmfao.gif

For now, I'm finding everything I need for information.

Maybe some new freinds to. It does "stand-out" that most of you people are from the US. Not that that is very surprising, this is offcourse an english spoken forum, and not that it is bad, becouse americans can be very much fun!

Furthermore, I hope to be finding not only new information, and new friends, but also some new idea's and visions of life.
