Hello everyone,
I don't have a lot of computer experience. In fact I have a problem right now, but I will post that in the appropriate spot. I am 30 years old and a paralegal student online with Kaplan University. I hope to learn much more about computers so I will not panic everytime I have a problem. Iwill appreciate any help that I recieve.

Welcome to BC!
I took the liberty, Heather, of taking your reply to another post and making it a new a separate topic in a different forum. Your problem about Word document saves is now in the business applications forum.
When you have a problem, if you put it in a reply to some other problem, the tendency will be for it to get lost (no one will look at it because they are either not interested in the original topic of the thread, or think the reply is meant to resolve the original problem).
Rule of the thumb in posting to boards is "new problem/ different problem, then new post."
Regards,
John

Best Site Ever!!! VERY HELPFUL!!!
Hmm.....I know enough to keep my network spanky clean and be of help to the locals in my small town. Didn't know enough to keep my son away from my dis-mantled lap top though
Running Fx with Avast!/Sygate (free ones) along with the 'standard' stuff like ad-aware SE etc.
Looking forward to learning something and
maybe being of some help to some one.

I am totally confused by this introduction process as I am about many thing esp. with the computer. Lately I've been fantacizing about turning my computer into a really usefull machine. It would be something like Charlie Brown and his friends taking an ugly stick with some pine needles sticking out of it and somehow transforming it into a well decked out Christmas tree. I ran across this site looking to the answer to a simple question but finding it I'm thinking I may have found my best friends. Imagine a place I can go with my endless "How the H#$* do you do this?" questions!

While it is true that most members here are American, BC also has many members from Canada, the UK, Australia, and NewZealand, not to mention from almost every nation in the world.
Somewhat outdated, but nevertheless interesting and probably representative, is a list of known nationalities of BC members:

I just found this site after getting burned by a Malware attack. I tried to be clever and eliminate it myself. I even used the XP original disk to operate in command mode and erase several files that were protected when XP and all the files were running. I did pretty good, but it still had an executable "Ypiapy.exe" that would spawn a new copy of itself in system32 and, of course execute.
I also lost the ability to change my background on the desktop. After reading the forum here and a post by MFDnSC on "Spyware has changed my Desktop Background" I installed Ewido and running in Safe Mode it found an item in my boot.inx file. That seemed to take care of the Spyware and then the vb script in that post at www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/cleandesktop.exe fixed the desktop.
Interesting to note is that Ypiapy.exe was not visible in the Windows Task Manager. But it was detected as running with DllView.
Anyway after two days of sweat and just about ready to reload my system I am now running again and I know have learned that you can get infected just by visiting a site!
Best regards and Happy New Year,
Stan

Hello -
Just wanted to say thanks for the help I received in removing the *&#$@ "SpyFalcon". I don't know about others, but this "program" rendered my computer un-usable. I still can't figure out how it got there in the first place. (but for now on, NO ONE will be allowed to even go near my computer)
My computer is back to normal, and I'm so glad!!!
Thanks again,
Jamsie

Yes, you have got to be careful when someone else gets near your computer.

Hello and many thanks to all of you who have created bleepingcomputer.com!!! Since the 13 Mar 2006 I was infected with what I now know to be the virtumondo / winfixer pop-up problem. Initially I was paralyzed with fear that I may need to reformat my hard drive, as I did the last time I had a virus in the 1990's. For several days I did nothing but avoid my computer

then after a few searches and reading the Symantic and Mcafee help pages and the security information pages at Comcast.net, I was even more afraid and riddled with uncertainty, particularly one article used an example of a woman who became further infected with another virus or trojan, by performing a general internet search and visiting a website claiming to be friendly and there to help remove the original problem, but it infected her further. That information alone drove me nuts, added to the relentless stream of pop--ups, freezing, slowness, etc.
Needless to say I became completely determined not to do anything until I could be relatively sure the help was real. After doing the neglected items for my PC's health and updating all virus definitions, etc, I downloaded Ad-Aware as suggested somewhere in one of the forums I visited. It was sad to learn that it wouldn't scan my PC without shuting down. Finally, I cracked and posted in the forum at Mcafee, after having an online chat and asking the question, does Mcafee monitor the posts in the forums? After being told yes, I decided to try some of the advice there and immediately after my post a moderator posted a link to your tutorial on the Vundo Demon! (YUK) So far all I can say is how truly grateful I am for the simplistic tutorials and a sloution to my problem.
So far I have run the Vundo Fix and removed Vundo (YAY!) Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and Spybot S&D following all your instructions. Seems to be running smoothly.
Now that I know how much I don't really know about my computer and the technical world behind it, I am looking forward to spending more time here and learning as much as possible about staying uptodate, trojan, worm and virus free. Thank you so very much!

Hi all. I discovered this site while surfing for a solution to a nasty pop-up/virus problem several months ago. I just registered at the site today. I found some solutions but I'm still having some problems with the machine and hope to solve them here.
I found the look-ups for all the miscellaneous unknown files hanging out on my computer to be extremely helpful and found several virus programs in the process.
It's a great service to the at-large user community. Next, I'll try and figure out how to make a donation.
Thanks

I just wanted to write and say thanks for the removal tool(s) for SpyFalcon. As soon as I saw it I realized it was pure bull----. I knew better than to buy a program that just "showed up" on my computer. Should have known better than to allow others on my computer too. Any way I was able to remove the SpyFalcon program from my computer early on, but that icon in my notification area and the popup message was driving me NUTS. Thanks again for the help, and I'll be sure to mention your site and the removel tool at our next computer group meeting. PCUGSJ(Personal Computer Users Group South Jersey) Ed Musick....
