I have a son who is studying IT, and now is wanting to make a dual boot between Vista and XP

This appears to be a well designed guide
but will it give him whilst booting up his computer the choise to either launch XP or Vista?

Yes. I just read the article from your link.

seems to be clear, concise and exactly to the point.

Sure, Vista will give you a menu to choose between Vista or XP, if it sees XP on another hard drive when you install Vista and.

I'm running a dual boot system with XP MCE and Vista Premium, fozzie.

I used different software to do the partitioning and edit the boot manager, but otherwise those instructions look very good, and basically exactly what I did.

Let us know how it goes, OK?

I found out the hard way that when dual booting that when you go to XP any restore points in Vista are deleted. It concerned me at first. The reason I wanted to dual boot was incase there was a program or piece of hardware that wouldn't work with Vista.

I very seldom even bother going into XP any more and am just about ready to do away with the XP installation and run just Vista.

I did just read that if you are running Vista Business or Ultimate (I am running Ultimate) that the bit locker protection feature will keep from loosing restore points in Vista. Haven't tried it yet and probably won't bother as I am pretty much using Vista only.

I haven't read of any fixes for that problem when dual-booting, but then again I NEVER depend upon System Restore - it has failed too many times when I've needed it (FYI - it's probably my fault that it failed because of my tinkering)
