Hello, my friend is having this problem connecting to the internet with a laptop that used to belong to a college and apparently the configuration on it hasnt been wiped. I tried fixing it for him a few days ago, but had no luck. It's connected to a home network through a linksys router (hard-wired). I made sure that the connection was obtaining its ip via DHCP and I also tried repairing the connection. It still didn't work. My question is, would there be any policies set on the laptop that could prevent it from obtaining network access outside its campus environment and where can I check for them and of course, how can I fix them? Its a fairly old laptop (5 years or so), with XP pro installed. Btw, the other PC on the network can connect to the internet. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it!

there very well could be a security policy prevent network access. I would first check to see if the 'Internet Options' (in Control Panel) are set to use a proxy server.

How would I go about that?

open the control panel
open 'internet options'
go to 'connections' tab
click 'lan settings' button

There actually was stuff configured there. I unchecked everything to make sure it wasn't using the campus proxy, but I'm still getting "Limited or No connectivity"

Run this command in a DOS window.

ipconfig /renew

Be sure there is a space between the g and the /

I've used that countless times with every method I'd tried.
