Hello - can anyone tell me about the new windows OS - Vista? I currently have windows XP Home, and was wondering if I could upgrade or is a new installation far better? Please give me me some pros and cons, based on your use of the program.

In my opinion, vista is a PIG 512 ram minimum to run, but it really needs lots more. 2 gig to run OK, 4 gig seems to be the sweet spot.

Personally I always wait until the first service pack for a MS operating system is released. Hopefully they fix most of the gremlins by then. (Service pack 2 is for bugs).

Heed the hardware specs - they're serious. FWIW - you can't "see" 4 gB of RAM on a 32 bit Vista installation (I have about 3.25 of my 4 gB visible). 1gB is OK, but 2 is better IMO.

FWIW the copy of vista that I have is 64bit ultimate version, just have not re installed it yet. I am waiting for service pack one.

You'll be waiting an awful long time buddy. I hear Vista SP1 won't come out 'till 2010 or later.

My XP 64 bit is nice and stable, I can wait!

Vista SP1 will ship in the second half of 2007, at the same time as Longhorn Server. From the rumors going around it sounds more like it will be a feature pack than a service pack.

Q1 08 is what I have heard. I cant seem to find about what is going to be in it ---yet

A new version of the kernel, which is a first for a service pack, and a new version of Media Center.

ybenvious -

if your system is stable, and you have no compelling reason to upgrade to Vista, then I'd recommend that you stay with XP.

If your system is aging somewhat, getting some more time out of it, and then moving to Vista when you replace it, makes very good sense in a lot of situations.
