Hi,

I bought an old second-hand laptop, running Windows 98 second edition. It came with an external card modem, but I can't get a dial tone when I try to connect.

In the Communications Port Properties, Port Com 1 listed, which it said is working properly. But under the Modem Pproperties, it says Com 3 and Com 5 standard PCMCIA card modems. I don't know if this means the modem is not using the right port, or whether there is something wrong with the modem itself and it needs to be replaced.

I took the modem out and tried it in another laptop. Windows found it and installed whatever, but it still wouldn't get a dial tone.

Can anyone please help.

have you installed the correct drivers as windows 98 SE's plug 'n' play isnt that good, go to the manufacturers web site and download the latest drivers for windows 98.

Thanks! It's weird because the computer was connected to the internet before I bought it. It has MSN messenger installed and a Nokia phone thing. I assumed all I had to do was change the location number to mine and set up the internet details of my server sad.gif But it just won't get a dial tone.

Will give the driver suggestion a go. Thank you so much.
