Full Version: My Network Is Acting Up...

My network is starting to act funny. For some reason, no network locations are appearing on the PC that I'm using. It can still connect to the internet though. I have a static IP, and Quest Hi-Speed DSL, and my modem's model is Actiontec GT701-WG. All the computers on my network run Windows XP Pro. It's been like this for a while, and I've been trying to fix it myself, and finally figured out it was time to get some help...

Here's some helpful pictures to help you help me.

Please respond ASAP, I may need to do a backup soon...
wh00pa
Um, be more specific, what is it doing odd, It might help to just unplugg all your devices and turn them back on from the wall jacks to the computers, It resets the network
projectfocus
this sounds like the machines are all on the same network and correct IP address structure but not in the same workgroup. Have a look and see if all of the machines are set to the same workgroup or domain depending on your setup.
projectfocus
Also why is the DNS address of the local machine set to a address outside of your local network. Try setting this to 192.168.0.1 and see if that helps to resolve the name issue.
What you will notice if this is set incorrectly you will not be able to connect to a machine using it's name. If you know the IP address of the other machines try connecting to them using \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\ where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of the other machine.
madman6510
I've tried your DNS fix, all PCs are on the same workgroup, and I've unplugged the devices and plugged them in, last time I did so I waited an hour. Still not working.
madman6510
I ran a network diagnostics scan, and got the following results.

Someone please reply, this problem is starting to bug me.

Someone PLEASE give me a suggestion! I really need to use my network!

Disconnect the router from the wall power.

Leave it unplugged for thirty seconds replug it in.

let us know the results.

Are you using a D Link router?
madman6510
Question one: No difference.
Question two: No.
oldf@rt
On the back of most routers there is a reset button (inset, normally red) if you have not reset the router yet, try this next:

with the router powered on push and hold the reset button in for 15 seconds.

Warning this will reset the router to factory defaults and you will have to re configure the router again.

I have already tried this, and it hasn't done any good.

Also, as it is unclear in the main post, this problem is only occuring on one computer on my network, and unfortunately it is my main one. The other computers networks work fine.
oldf@rt
I went through the list again, saw something I missed before:

Caption = [00000008] Intel® PRO/100 VE Network Connection

Is this the adapter on the computer with problems?

If it is check the network card or if you have another card, see if that one works correctly.

Also check the ends of the cable to the machine that has problems.
usasma
Since you've got ping errors, you're not connecting to the web.

I'd suggest running the New Connection Wizard and the Network Setup Wizard on each computer (after disabling the current connections) - in addition to resetting your router. Make sure that you use the same Workgroup name on each system - and that you have different computer names.

Leave everything else at the default/automatic settings - once that's done (if you still can't connect) then there's some other issues that will have to be dealt with.
madman6510
Usasma, I am using the computer with the problems to connect to the internet and post these topics, so I am connected to the internet. Oldf@rt, I know the network card is OK because I used a Linux Live CD and I got a good network connection there. (I always refrain from opening the computer up if I can help it, who knows how much I could screw stuff up...)
oldf@rt
have you checked the winsock files yet?

If you have not, here is a link to a utility that will let you see what is being used. It can totally hose your connection if you attemp changes with it, so please be careful;

http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm
madman6510
Ran the utility, no problems found.
madman6510
*Just starting an email subscription, ignore this post*

Have you checked the firewall settings on the OTHER computers?

Also back to the beginning I saw the subnetmask in the router as 255.255.255.255, i believe it should be
255.255.255.0
Monty007
Can you back slash to any of the PCs? \\computer name
madman6510
The firewall settings on the other computers are ok, and the buddy who set up the network for me placed a password on the router settings so I can see them, just can't change anything.
madman6510
Come on, someone PLEASE help me...
Monty007
Have you disabled the firewall completely just to see if you can see the connections? Also have you tried to reinstall the network on your PC? Kill it and start again.
madman6510
Didn't work...
Monty007
Can you access the other PCs from your PC ? The other pCs can acess your PC is that right?
madman6510
My computer can NOT see the other PC's, but the other PC's can see me.
Monty007
1)What firewall are you using?
2)Can you back slash to one of your PCs? \\pc name
Ive about run out of ideas found this site which might be worth a look http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/nethandbooks/net-tr...e-shooting.html
madman6510
1) Either the standard MS XP firewall or no firewall.
2) What does backslashing mean? I can't connect, does it mean telling you one of the PC names? \\mainofficepc3

And I looked at that site, that's for Mac, not Windows.
Monty007
Sorry about the site. Back slash means trying direct path through to a PC so \\your Pc name
your PC name being the computer name of the PC you want to acsess.
madman6510
Ok, so that would be a no then.
madman6510
bump
Baloo
Are you able to ping the following address from the problem computer?
127.0.0.1
THis will test to see if your TCP/IP stack is hosed or not.

ALso try running this command from a DOS prompt
netsh winsock reset catalog

You will be prompted to restart the PC after the command finishes.
madman6510
The ping works great, and the command didn't do anything.
g_style
i know you have tried the winsock util but have you tried this version of it
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

also have you buy change tried to createing a network boot disk on one of the computers and using it to creater the setting on the other computers? this only ever resolved a problem for me once before but you never know what you will find out smile.gif

let me know what happens
