I have a 512MB thumbdrive and I have a copy of Vista. My question is this:
Can I use the thumbdrive as extra Ram for my laptop? If so, how do I do this?

Yes you can use a thumbdrive to increase speed, its called readyboost if the drive you plan to use is fast enough for readyboost, vista should ask you automatically when you insert it how much of the drive to use. the basic principle behind it is that the drive is used as an extra cache and use its superfetch memory management to speed things up

Will this increase storage space on my hard-drive if I choose?
If you use the flash drive as extra storage, then you have an extra 1/2 G beyond what you have on your HD.
If you can use the flash drive as Ready Boost RAM (and you may not want to if it is actually going to make your system perform slower than using your HD for virtual RAM), then only when it is plugged in would it make any difference on how much of your HD is available for data storage, if at all.
However, it may be that if you are getting to where you have only 512M of space left on your HD, or an extra 512M of storage is something you really need, you may start experiencing other problems. I believe most experts recommend that if you are using the last 10% of your HD, you will probably begin experiencing problems.
