Ok, I reinstalled Windows ME from the CDs bc my computer crashed...I couldnt restore it at all, even with Dells help.

Anyway, I reinstalled the operating system and have moved on the the Drivers Resource CD.

From there, I installed the Notebook System Software and then the only option for Chip Set Drivers: "Intel Mobile Chipset Rev: A09"

After that, Im supposed to install the appropriate Video Driver...this is where I'm stuck. The only option is "Intel Graphics Video Rev: A07", but when I extract it and the installation program begins it says "one or more files required for installation are either missing or corrupt."

What do I do?

Here are the order specifications for my computer:

Heres a link to all the drivers for your system
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/...tid=&impid=

awesome...thank you so much. Should I put those on a CD and then onto my computer, or should I use the internet on my laptop to download them? Just not sure if its safe (or even if I can) to use the internet before all of that is downloaded.

thanks again
Eyesee
All you need is the Video driver
ATIs™ Mobility Radeon™ X300
Its down at the bottom
AgCoach
thanks...should I connect from my laptop that doesnt have the driver or put it on a disc and install it that way?
Eyesee
Either way
Not a bad idea to burn it onto cd in case you ever need it again
AgCoach
Ok, my laptop wont recognize my wireless internet...is there a driver that is needed for the internal card?

If you just reinstalled your OS, which you did, you need to install all drivers. And in a specific order too.

Install the chipset driver first.
Then install the ATI Radeon video drivers.
Then install the Sigma Tel AC97 audio drivers.

After that, you may need to call Dell for the specific wireless driver for your system. There are quite a few listed on their website. Only the right one will work
AgCoach
They are saying I have to pay them $40 for the drivers..why wont they just tell me which ones I need so I can do it myself?? I hate Dell.

Thanks for your help Eyesee...I guess I'll be dishing more money to Dell so I can get it fixed and then sell it. What a POS company.

/so frustrated/
Eyesee
Dont do that just yet!

Did you get the rest of the drivers installed correctly yet?

Go to the Dell link that I gave you and see if any match the report you posted. The drivers are there. You just have to get the right ones.

The Dell website wont let me change the driver list just to show ME files.
You want the Intel Pro 2200 fow Windows ME, I think
AgCoach
I have only installed what I said on the first post....other than that I have no idea where to go....I dont know the video driver or anything that I need....if I knew what I needed I could DL them to a CD and upload them to my computer...but I dont know....its so damn frustrating...
TheTerrorist_75
Click Edit next to Service tag and input yours at the Dell Support page. It may just show the drivers for your build. If not download Everest and it should show what hard ware you laptop contains.
Eyesee
Lets clarify something first.
You said that you installed ME but the order specs say that the system came with XP Media Center Edition. Did you install ME or XP?
Looks like the only drivers there are for XP
AgCoach
Sorry...I installed ME (I thought it was XP ME...I dont really know anything haha).

I have the correct Operating System and have installed the Chipset Driver and the System Software. From there, I dont know where to go sad.gif

Thanks so much for all of your help!
Eyesee
Well, that appears to be our problem then!
The system shipped with XP Media Center Edition
All drivers on the website are for XP there are none for ME.
No wonder they wont work huh!
You need to install XP to get it to work correctly not ME
AgCoach
they just send me the ME disk sad.gif

am I screwed? just pay the $40 I guess?
Eyesee
Who sent you the ME disks? Not Dell, I guarantee you that!
Any tech there would know what OS shipped with the system. Windows ME hasnt shipped for almost 7 years.
It would also be a violation of their licence agreement with Microsoft to do so.

What I have been trying to tell you is that you do not have the correct OS installed. Even though you said that you do, you dont! I should have caught that earier.

Think about it for a second, and let me try to make it as clear as possible. Your computer shipped from Dell with Windows XP Media Center Edition preinstalled. It says so on the list that you provided above. That is the base operating system that your computer is designed to run. You installed Windows ME which predates Windows XP For what reason is not clear. There does not appear to be any drivers for Windows ME and your system on the Dell website. That means they dont make them.
Windows ME is not the base operating system and will not work correctly.
You are pirating the OS anyway

That being said you basically have two options:

1. Call Dell and see if you can order the original restoration cd's
2. Go buy a copy of Windows XP Media Center Edition.

Unless anyone else has another ideas, those are basically your only two choices.

There is a third option...... a quick google shows that Linux will setup on this notebook. You may have to enable WiFi in the BIOS but from what I read, it is doable on this laptop. Spend a few days reading up on Linux. Multimedia is a little more feature rich in Windows (...Linux is gaining), but for general office apps, internet and email, Linux is pretty much easier to install than Windows and point 'n click nowadays.

Also, you won't have to worry about activations, defragmenting, or viruses and spyware. Your Linux installation WILL NOT send back any personal information to some giant corporation, and you will have your Linux disk (usually free or for a $5 - $10 fee) forever....for you to keep and install on as many home or home office PCs as you desire.

good luck with Dell and those disks
