After start up, when I try to go into excel, word, almost anything, my monitor goes straight to sleep mode.

Have you checked the energy settings of your monitor? Tightclick on the desktop - propperties - energy(power) settings

Fozzie...you missed a step in there, it should be rightclick on desktop > porperties > screen saver > power. There you should be able to select the amount of time before the monitor turn off.
