i have a belkin G+ MIMO wireless router and it is a 108 mbps router. a friend of mine gave me a USB adaptor which is also 108 mbps, but when i hover my cursor over the icon for the router it says SPEED=54MBPS SIGNAL STRENGTH=EXCELLENT. why is it only transfering at 54mbps? i have just purchased a new laptop and that is also only 54mbps. could you please advise me as to why this may be and if i wasted the extra on a 108mbps when i could have bought a 54mbps.

many of the 108mbps wifi routers require you to use the same brand of adapter in the computer

Some routers also fall back to the speed that is most reliable. If for some reason you have a degree of interference the router will connect at the speed that is least affected. Also your laptop being 54 mbps may have created a choke point. Reset your LAN without the notebook and see if your bandwidth increases to 108 mbps. It maybe you have to upgrade your notebook to reach full bandwidth.

It may also be the result of the "trick" used to get 108 mbps (54 x 2) - and it may not be recognized by Windows (sorta like double pumping the FSB).

A test with and without the 108 mbps enabled should show any difference.
