Hi everyone, this is my first post here. I've been looking around trying to find a solution to get rid of Windows Defender but have had no luck. I'm pretty sure I had the beta version, so I tried all the suggestions with no luck.

When I first boot up my computer I get:
QUOTE
Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba A problem caused Windows Defender service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search help and support on how to start a service manually"

So, after that I try to uninstall it and I get this:

Followed by this:

Then I tried to reinstall and I get this:

Followed by this:

I really have no clue what to do......I did a registry edit too and that didnt work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. if it helps, I'm running XP Pro SP2. And here's whats in the program file for Windows Defender:

Did you try to uninstall Defender while running in Safe Mode?

Oh, and I'm fairly new here, too, as far as number of posts.

Welcome to the board.

Well, I booted in safe mode and tried to uninstall Defender and got this:

ugh...this is really annoying.
JohnWho
Yeah, I can see that.

One more thing from me, while others are scratching their heads -

Turn off Windows Update and then try uninstalling/reintalling Defender again.

There is some interaction between these two programs that may be causing your problem.

Whatever, don't forget to put Windows Update back to your current setting.
FisticufsFred22
Tried turning off Automatic Updates and that didn't work either.

Are you signing in as "Administrator"?

Are you shutting down all the other programs that may be running in background - Anti-virus, etc.?

Have you scanned your system for AV, Malware, etc.?

I can see you are running the defander stand-alone prog in XP. Do you no longer have the installation package (WindowsDefender.msi) That seems to be the root of the pr0blem. If you have it but cannot locate it manually, how about a search?

Try installing Windows Defender again, and then try to remove it.

If that doesn't work you can always try:

Uninstall Programs Manually

Others have successfully used the Windows Installer Cleanup utility to uninstall Defender.
