This is a new system & the DVD drive can't run software shipped with it. The CD-ROM works in other drives & different media was tried. The Sony works in an external enclosure with a USB interface & can read the shipped CD just fine!
Any ideas what settings in the BIOS can cause this type of behavior, please?
Thank you in advance.

Can you clarify this:
QUOTE

And when you say Sony, is that the one you're having problems with or is it the DVD drive?
Does the light on any of the drives lightup?, and do the tray respond when clicking on the open button?
Sony is not enjoying a good reputation for their firmware as of late, you might want to see if there is an update for it.

It is a Sony DVD internal ATAPI drive, lights, eject button & Windows Eject command all work. There's some setting in the BIOS I suspect that won't allow the drive to read media properly.
The CD-ROM referred to are different media tried in the new PC. The drive works fine on other PCs. This is why I suspect a BIOS setting is the problem.
The Sony support site offered no updates for the firmware or clues about causes for the symptoms.
Thank you again! Allen

What you could do is put in another disc, and let it give the errors or whatever, then document the date/time. and then goto your Event Viewer. Then sort the Date column, and you probably will have a log of the error, even if it doesn't actually display one to you while the error is happening. Then post the error ID, and other pertinent info. Also, before you do that, when you right-click on it, and choose Properties, it'll tell you what the actual problem is.
