I have a week old Toshiba that has the following errors in the startup menu:

Here they are:

Windows Defender
Filename %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.ex
Warning: This file does not exists.

00TCrdMain
Filename %ProgramFiles%\TOSHIBA\FlashCards\TCrdMain.exe
Warning: This file does not exists.

HSON
Filename %ProgramFiles%\TOSHIBA\TABS\HSON.exe
Warning: This file does not exists.

SmoothView
Filename %ProgramFiles%\Toshiba\SmoothView\SmoothView.exe
Warning: This file does not exists.

TPwrMain
Filename %ProgramFiles%\TOSHIBA\Power Saver\TPwrMain.EXE
Warning: This file does not exists.

I'm assuming these are all some sort of malware/spyware/trojan.

No malware or spyware there. It is a ver bad installation. My first choice , if this is a retail purchase, would be to take it back and tell them to sort it! Otherwise, if you have purchased from a private sale, then it looks as if, for some reason, the programs referred to have been removed.
1. Windows Defender is part of Vista. Corrupt install'
2. Flashcards is a freeware program. Apparently a bad path or removed. T
3. Smoothview is also a freeware program, It has been removed or has a bad path.
4. Power save is another third party software program.TBS is part of it. Apparently it has been removed or has a bad path.

You can uninstall the last three, through the control panel/Programs. Defender is a bit of a harder problem. You could temporarily disable it, also through the control panel. There may be an easier way, but to reinstall may need a complete Vista reinstall. Otherwise, for the defender option only, run the repair option on the install DVD.

There may be a third party way to reinstall it, which another reader might help you with.

Do you have any idea what these programs do? I know defender, but not the others.

TCrdMain
This is an utility linked to the Hotkeys of your laptop

SmoothviewIt is used to offer Zoom functionality in common application such as MS-Office[/url]

TPwrMain.EXE is controlling the power saving settings on your laptop

HSNON. exe has no info on internet but the path suggests it is a utility.

Isn't there a CD with the laptop with utilities? Would re-installing help?

Re your last fozzie - I doubt if it will help. When the computer manafacturers build a preinstall cd, they usually throw on anything lying around, as there is so much wasted cd space. They will all be time limited time demos some of which already expired. Its not a big problem. The poster could possibly even find them running on startup through the MsConfig. Defender is the biggest problem if he feels he needs it - any ideas?

I'm not sure where to find them on vista, it's harder to get around in that XP.

Try this:

Download this program:

submit files packer

Highlight the files listed below in bold and right-click and selecting copy.


C:\Program Files\\TOSHIBA\TABS\HSON.exe
C:\Program Files\\Toshiba\SmoothView\SmoothView.exe
C:\Program Files\\TOSHIBA\Power Saver\TPwrMain.EXE


Then start the file packer program and right click in the white box and select paste to paste the copied file names in the field.

Then press the Continue button.

I will create an archive with these files and a small log on your Desktop that starts with a name like requested-file[date].cab.

Rename this file to yourmembername.cab (for example grinler.cab).

Then go to:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php
and fill in the required fields and browse to this file on your desktop. Finally click on the Send File button.

Done (I think). If not, let me know and thanks for all of the help.

They did not get through properly. Try submitting these files instead using the process from my last post. The extra \ i had in there previously may have messed up the process.

Tried it again, hope it goes this time. Sorry to take so long to reply, I got moved to a new location a day or so after the last post and there was no internet until today.

Got all of em but HSON.exe.

The HSON.exe will not copy over for some reason. It wouldn't go either time. I highlighted them all and it does not show up.

Any ideas on how to fix the "file not found error" in the startup list? I guess I shouldn't worry about it, but stuff like this annoys me, and it's a new computer. It seems to be running fine.

What program are you running that states the file does not exist?

I'm using startup inspector for windows, version 2.

When I try to disable them in the startup menu, I get " Warning: This file does not exist" in red.

I get this on the following items:

Windows Defender
TCrdMain.exe
Smoothview.exe
TPwrMain.exe
HSON.exe

But we know these files do exist correct? You can see them via Windows Explorer ? Maybe a bug in startup inspector?

Yes, they are all there in windows. I guess I'm worried about nothing?
The computer seems to function fine; I'll leave it as is for now. Thanks for all of your assistance.
