hello,
Just today, on my mom's PC, she found out she could not get online at all. Then when she tries to do a Norton Antivirus scan, the Protection Center (its the 2007 version), doesn't open up. ON top of that, she can't do system restores at all. Do you guys have any suggestions for her?

Hi Jesse:

There are some kinds of malware that hoses security programs and causes problems with internet connections. I'm going to give a canned speech shortly, but here are some addendums. All the programs you see listed in the guide, download them from another computer onto a disk or flash drive and install them on the infected computer from there. Don't worry about the on-line scans. I'd also suggest physically disconnecting the infected computer from the internet for now. If the HiJack This program won't run, rename it to something else, perhaps analyse.bat If you run into any problems before posting the log, please post back and we'll help you out.

I suggest you follow the directions in this guide. Then create an HJT log, you will find the directions in the guide.

Create a new topic in this forum, not here and give it a good descriptive title. Briefly summarize what the problems are, what you have done to try to solve it, and what worked and didn't work and paste in your HJT log.

After you post your log, DO NOT make any further changes to your computer: deleting files, editing the registry, using special fix tools, installing or uninstalling software etc. as this will make it more difficult for the HJT team to help you.

Please be patient as the HJT team is very busy. DO NOT bump your log as the team may think that someone is already helping you. If you have not had a response in five days, add a response to the five days no response topic and paste in the link to your thread.

Thanks for the response Orange Blossom. I apolgoize for bumping my topic, but it was getting to be a pain for mum. So here is what she found out:

A windows update sent out on 2/19/07 was what screwed her PC. According to two sources, it was a hotfix for Internet Explorer 7.

--------------

Now I've done my own research and cannot find a way to fix this problem. She will not let me install HJT onto her PC. She's more trusting towards my Uncle than me. The problem appears not to be Norton related, but Microsoft related. Is there a way to fix this? She has her financial, work, and personal information on her PC. And its 2 years old.... -- Jesse
