Hi there,
I am experiencing a problem with excel 2003 slow to open - Does anyone have any ideas?
It has only just happened and I haven't done anything that would cause it. (Not that I know of anyway!)

Have you recently installed other applications or done any upgrades or anything as this is not normally something that will happen on the off chance.

You could try and use the firstrun switch to see if this opens correctly.

Start->Run-> type"excel.exe /firstrun"

Hi Projectfocus
The only thing I have done is remove all my old java stuff and installed just the latest version.

If I start a "blank" spreadsheet either via the shortcut icon or as you suggested "excel.exe /firstrun" it starts almost straight away. If I try to open an existing spreadsheet (direct) it takes forever.
If I open the spreadsheet I want from within an open "blank" spreadsheet (i.e file-open) then it opens straight away.
I have also noticed that word is doing the same thing.
Both are part of office 2003 professional.

Any ideas as to why? huh.gif

Are the application files on an external hard disk?
Did you ever did a thorough cleanup of your computer?
Do you have a lot of shortcuts to office docs on your desktop?
lyngio
Yes I have the application files on disk.
I do a regular clean up of my PC every month - sometimes sooner - Has not affected it before.
No I don't have a lot of office shortcuts on the desktop.
fozzie
Do you run applications in VBS?
lyngio
Sorry - What do you mean by VBS?? sad.gif

Uninstall Office than

Download install and update Ccleaner
After installing and updating go to options - advanced and tick prompt for registry back ups
Now Start up in safe mode
Do two runs

1) Click on problems and tick all. Click on analyse. At the end you will be prompted for storing a backup.
This will be stored, as a default, in My documents.
2) Click on cleaner click on analyse and accept all files to be removed.

Install office and see what happens

You dont need to reinstall Office to fix your problem.

Put your office 2003 CD in your PC. Go to add/remove programs. Find your office program on there. Click change. Then click repair. This will repair your office program to the factory state. You wont loose documents or anything, it just repairs the files.

Let me know if this fixes the issue!

Thanks Jesse and Fozzie - I'm still not having any luck on this one - Frustrating.
In answer to your idea Jesse,Nope. Tried just the "fix" and also a re-install.
Could it be I have lost some registers from previos CC Cleans do prior to all this?? If so is there a way of searching for it and then re-installing it??
As mentioned before I have a shortcut to the EXCEL program on the desktop which opens straight away and I can then open any excel spreadsheets without any problem. However, trying to open any spreadsheet from scratch causes this "long time" to open issue. I am having exactly the same problem with WORD!!!???
fozzie
Have you made backups from your registry?
lyngio
Guilty! Not on all occassions :-(
fozzie
... As a default they are stored in My Documents folder and they are given the name of the date. Can you check which is the most recent one?Was the computer running fine at that moment?
lyngio
there is only the one from today while doing the safe mode operation as per your previous suggestion - unfortunately after the problem was evident... :-(

If you did a re-install everything should be ok as far as the register is concerned

The problem of SLOW open, save, and close of Excel is actually quite common. The solution is to delete all of your *.emf files. These are temporary files created by excel each time you open, add, change, etc... an Excel file. Over time, not only does your pc accumulate a lot of these files, but they can also become corrupt. If you use Excel often (which most of us do), you'll want to check for and delete these *.emf files.

Navigation =
Start-->Search-->files & folders-->Local Disk
Enter *.emf in the file name box and then press FIND/SEARCH.

search for normal.dot, delete it, it will regenerate when opening word and excell again.

Hi - I seem to have fixed the issue all be it from another angle. I began having issues with spware and web pages popping up so I ran thru the "Do you have pop-ups or malware" section but found I still kept getting slammed with popups etc. After also checking other peoples issues with hijacks and malware issues I downloaded and ran SuperAntiSpyware and it would appear that all is now well with both my excel problaem and spyware problem. :-)

Sorry it took me a while to get back to this subject but if the firstrun switch worked fine then it was always going to be a addin or startup file in office. I gather it was malware that was entering into the startup folder for excel.
