I wanted to start using an on-line backup service to keep my data safe (fire, flood, user error). The services are a bit pricy. Then I wondered if I could trade my excess drive space with a friend and we could remotely back up our data to each other's computer.

Is that possible? What kind of firewall settings, drive mappings, and backup settings would we need? Obviously, we would want the best stuff; scheduled, unattended, incremental and full, etc.

Yep, I backup my wife's office to my home computer every night. I use pcAnywhere since her office had purchased it and it's very easy to setup and use.

You'll need the external IP address for each computer, an IP monitor program to let you know if the IP changes (I use the free Gateway IP Monitor), and you'll have to forward the ports if you're behind a router. Finally, you'll have to leave the pcAnywhere Host running on each PC.

I used to use SyncbackSE and had setup an FTP server for this purpose - but it was too slow and it there were too many attempts to hack into it - so I switched to the pcAnywhere program and haven't looked back!

Others may be able to suggest some freeware applications to do this also.
