I installed a wireless router a week or so ago. Everything seemed to be fine for a few days. But I noticed music downloads were slower. The last couple of days I'm having trouble getting on the internet. I can prompt Windows to repair the connection and I've gotten 2 different causes.
First, Windows detected a problem with the Winsock provider catalog, would I like Windows to reset the catalog to default?
Second, it said internet connection has been restored for HTTP:// and HTTPS:// web pages but not for FTP. This, it says, can be fixed by adjusting the firewall settings. My firewall is zone alarm free and doesn't seem to have any tweaks like that.
Today I have tried to update a couple of programs including my firewall and the downloads get to a certain point right in the middle of the download and just stop. They still show they are downloading but they aren't so I just close them up.
I can't find the router in the device manager, and I don't have a connection icon either.
I assume this has got to be a router problem or a port problem or something but I'm obviously a green horn.Any help would be appreciated.

Have you scanned for viruses and spyware? I'd suggest that you do this free, online scan as a double check:
http://safety.live.comI've had odd problems with ZoneAlarm - so I'd suggest turning it off TEMPORARILY and seeing if this improves your connection.
After that we may have to try some troubleshooting of your connection.
The router won't appear in your device manager since it isn't a part of the Windows system. You should be able to access it by typing it's address into your browser. The most common addresses are:
http://192.168.0.1http://192.168.1.1

Hey Usasma, thanks for responding. Ran the scan. No virus, Seems to me that I have a firewall-router conflict. If I can just figure out the settings. I'll keep trying. Incidently, had a hard time downloading the tools to run the scan. Very frustrating. Thanks

Zone Alarm Pro just decided to block the animations in my wife's animated gifs that are viewed online. I've really had it with Zone Alarm and their "canned" tech support responses!

You may have a ADSL (If you have ADSL) modem that has a NAT router built in. If this is the case you may have your new router and your modem conflicting.
What modem do you have? Make and model.
