Hi TEWH9976,

Disable your antivirus program and go here http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html and run an online scan with BitDefender (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan). When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan" and grab a coffee. smile.gif

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab.
Click on "Click here to export scan".
Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop.
Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser.
Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here.
Post the BitDefender log.

*****************

You have a suspicious file we need to check.

You will need to configure Windows to show Hidden files.

Go to Jotti Online File Scanner copy and paste C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\rmass.exe to the upload and scan it.

Let me know the results.
Copy and paste the output to this thread

It should look something like this sample:
QUOTE
File: GoogleToolbarInstaller.exe
Status: MIGHT BE INFECTED/MALWARE (Sandbox emulation took a long time and/or runtime packers were found, this is suspicious. Normally programs aren't packed and don't force the sandbox into lengthy emulation. Do realize no scanner issued any warning, the file can very well be harmless. Caution is advised, however.)

Hi TEWH9976,

You have some malware, so lets get rid of it. smile.gif

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key. If that does not work this go to this site: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html

Please boot into Safe Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.”

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/209a1bc91b4235...ip/RdxIE601.cab
O20 - Winlogon Notify: {BC84DF00-BC38-9902-8082-6FCBF2D87A0B} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\RECOVER32.DLL

*******************************************

Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders',
deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)', and
deselect (uncheck) "Hide extensions for known file types.'

Don't use the windows start\search feature
Using Windows Explorer, find and delete each of the following. If you can't delete an item, right-click it and click properties. Make sure 'read-only' is unchecked.
If you still can't delete something, right-click it and rename it to a random word. Then drag the item to a different location. Try deleting it now. If you still can't, be sure to let me know.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following files/folders in bold (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\WINDOWS\System32\rmass.exe <==file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\RECOVER32.DLL <==file

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Finally, reboot to the Normal Mode and post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.
TEWH9976
I could not delete the files indicated, using any of the techniques you suggested. I got the following message:

"Cannot [rename] [move] rmass: It is being used by another person or program. Close any program that might be using the file and try again."

I tried to close rmass on the Task Manager but it wouldn't close.

Hi TEWH9976,

The reason Hijackthis doesnt work is that all windows are not closed. You have to close browser and explorer windows. If any of them are open, then the fix will not work. smile.gif

Also if you did not use the Safe Mode, it will not work.

So try the fix again, making sure you are in the Safe Mode and you have closed all browser and exlorer windows when making the fix.

If it still does not work,

Boot to Normal Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.”

Download KillBox to the desktop, that can be found here: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.exe

Run Killbox program, in the field labeled "Full Path of File to Delete" enter
C:\WINDOWS\System32\RECOVER32.DLL

select the "Delete on Reboot" and click on the Red X(delete file) ,when it asks if you would like to Reboot now, press the No button

For last file In the field labeled "Full Path of File to Delete" enter
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rmass.exe

select the "Delete on Reboot" and click on the Red X(delete file) ,when it asks if you would like to Reboot now, this time press Yes button

If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.

Reboot and post a fresh Hijackthis log.

I tried those instructions and I don't think it worked. Here's new Hijack log:

THEN, I got frustrated and downloaded PrevX1; see link:

http://fileinfo.prevx.com/spyware/qq78f827.../RMASS.EXE.html

I ran it and after rebooting I can't log in. Task Manager / System Processes says 99% on System Idle.

What can I do to get past that? Have I made a big mistake?

Thanks.

BY THE WAY, I AM WRITING THIS FROM MY OFFICE COMPUTER.

Yes, you made a mistake. Installing some programs while you are infected can make things worse. sad.gif
Since it is causing problems, uninstall Prevx. Let me know if you can log in.
TEWH9976
I can login but i just get my background but programs don't come up. system processes is 99% system idle.

So, essentially, I can't login -- either in safe mode or normal mode. Is there anything I can do?
SifuMike
Hi TEWH9976,

Right-click an empty space on the taskbar (bottom of the screen) and select Task Manager.
Click the Processes tab and then click the heading CPU twice. This will sort all processes top down by CPU usage. The processes using the most CPU will be at the top.
It is normal for System Idle Process to be 95% or more, as this is your free memory.

See what process is sucking up all the CPU and report back to me.
SifuMike
Try rebooting, keep tapping F8 at startup, when the menu appears, select "last known good configuration".

Hopefully, you can get back to normal mode.

Sounds like you may have damaged system files.

Can you do the Start> Run> ?

If so, run Microsoft's System File Checker program.

The utility will check the system files and automatically replace any that it finds necessary.

Scannow Tutorial
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

You may need the Windows Install CD, so have it ready.
Go to Start, then Runtype sfc /scannow in the run box and press enter.

When it has finished it will close itself.

Note: There is a space between sfc and the forward slash. Windows will ask you for your Windows Install CD so put it in...don't worry if the XP setup screen appears, this is not a part of sfc /scannow, your autorun utility in Windows is starting it. Simply
minimize the screen and allow sfc to continue.
TEWH9976
I figured out how to open programs from Task Manager - Applications - New Task, but can't find sfc / scannow that way. is there a way I can find it by looking through the C drive?
SifuMike
QUOTE

No.
you need to be able to reach the Start> Run and type that in. Please read my previous post on sfc / scannow

Have you tried to "restore to last good configuration"?

Can you run Hijackthis?

Are you able to download programs?
TEWH9976
Restore to last good configuration didn't work.

I can't get the start menu pull up.

I can download I think because I can get internet through the Task Mgr - Applications - New Task route.

Hi TEWH9976,

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.” .

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: {BC84DF00-BC38-9902-8082-6FCBF2D87A0B} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\RECOVER32.DLL (file missing)

Click Fix Checked.
Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed.

Close Hijackthis.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it.
Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
If your firewall gives an alert, (because this tool will download an additional file from the internet), please don't let your firewall block it, but allow it instead.

You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts.
Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new HijackThis log.
TEWH9976
I ran both but I can't find the Fixware log to post here, just the Hijack log.

The problem remains that all I can get when I log in is the background but no toolbar with start menu and no desktop programs, etc. come up.

on processes, nothing really comes up as using CPU other than system idle and occassionally TaskManager and CSRSS.EXE. Under memory usage, I have the following (is this normal?):

McShield.exe 30,152
SVCHOST.EXE 12,192
guard.exe 11,636
SVCHOST.EXE 9,568
(etc.)

I still can use programs by using "New Task" in Task Manager. However, I can't run SVC.exe for some reason (even though I can find it in c:\I386

Did you look for the logfile in C:\fixwareout\report.txt?

Those processes look normal. Why are you trying to run SVC.exe?

svc.exe is a process belonging to an advertising program by Odysseus Marketing. This process monitors your browsing habits and distributes the data back to the author's servers for analysis. This also prompts advertising popups.

You have three suspicious files we need to check.

You will need to configure Windows to show Hidden files.

Go to Jotti Online File Scanner copy and paste C:\Documents and Settings\Megs\gotomypc_428.exe to the upload and scan it.

Then do the same scan on this file:
C:\DOCUME~1\Megs\LOCALS~1\Temp\G2_428\g2viewer.exe
Find that SVC.exe (do a search) and run that through the scanner. Be sure to use the complete path to the file, not just the file name.

Let me know the results.
Copy and paste the outputs to this thread

It should look something like this sample:
QUOTE
File: GoogleToolbarInstaller.exe
Status: MIGHT BE INFECTED/MALWARE (Sandbox emulation took a long time and/or runtime packers were found, this is suspicious. Normally programs aren't packed and don't force the sandbox into lengthy emulation. Do realize no scanner issued any warning, the file can very well be harmless. Caution is advised, however.)

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously, along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

If I have damaged system files, why wouldn't this help>

If your system came with a Microsoft Windows XP installation CD, you can use this to perform a Windows Repair Installation. This tries to repair Windows by replacing the Windows system files on your hard disk with fresh copies from the CD. A Repair Installation will leave your own documents intact and, in most cases, your installed applications should also still work. If your machine came pre-installed with Windows XP and has not had XP Service Packs 1 or 2 applied, you may find that some applications need reinstalling after doing a Repair Install. If you are able to install the latest XP service pack prior to doing a Repair Install, you may may prevent this problem. Any Windows updates will need to be reapplied after running a Repair Installation.

"Did you look for the logfile in C:\fixwareout\report.txt?" Yes, I couldn't find it.

Strange thing also: after rebooting (after Dr.Web) the task manager doesn't show processes, but luckily is showing the applications tab so I can use programs.
SifuMike
Hi TEWH9976,

Please check in System32 folder to see if rmass.exe and Recover32.dll are back.
Let me know what you find.

***************

Since Task Manager is not working correctly, you can use replacement called Process Explorer. It is like a Task Manager on steroids, smile.gif as it gives far more useful information.
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

You can select any process and see listed in the lower pane the DLLs that the program uses. The Command Line column shows the hard-drive location of every running program, or--in the case of services (which sometimes run under svchost.exe)--it identifies which instance of svchost.exe invoked that service.

***************

Next, let's check for rootkits.

Download and Save blacklight to your desktop.

Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found.

Don't choose for rename yet! I want to see the log first, because legit items can also be present there... like "wbemtest.exe" :!:

There will be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).

Copy and paste this log in your next reply.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

Go ahead and give it a try.
TEWH9976
remass.exe and Recover32.dll do not appear to be in System32 anymore.

there were no items found in the blacklight search, and no log.

I can't do the Java download because I currently can't find start-->control panel.

I plan to do the XP Repair Installation tonight. I'll let you know how it goes. I'll do the Java download afterwards if everything goes OK.

Please let me know if you have any other instructions based on what I've laid out here.

THANKS
SifuMike
You are doing everything correctly. smile.gif Hope everything goes OK and let me know how it turns out.
TEWH9976
I went through the reinstall process, but the thing I hoped to repair has not changed:

after I log in, still all I see is my background without the task bar at the bottom (i.e., start menu, time, programs, etc.) and without any programs laid out on the desktop.

is there something I can do to get these back up and running? as I've said, my programs are still all intact and can be accessed through task manager. the only major thing I can't access is control panel.

is there something in regedit or the like that governs this?
SifuMike

I assume you mean no icons on the desktop.

You can try downloading these files in Safe mode and running them in Normal mode by opening the folder where you saved these files from Task Manager>New Task

Go to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Read the instructions at the top of the page.
Find these two files. One is a reg file the other is a vbs file.

Restore Taskbar and Start Menu

Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits...ktop_fixall.vbs
TEWH9976
These did not work.

Still no taskbar, start menu or icons on desktop.
SifuMike
try all of these:

Taskbar Is Missing When You Log On to Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;EN-US;Q318027

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

164 - Restore Taskbar to Default Functionality
195 - Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar

Taskbar Repair Tool Plus!
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm

******************

Boot to your desktop
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to open Task Manager
In Task manager click the New Task button on the General tab
In the New Task dialogue box type: 'explorer.exe' (without the quotes) and press OK
The Windows desktop should now appear

See if that works Or try a System Restore
