Just noticed that when I joined this great forum on Nov 17 last year, I was given the membership number 5292.
Now one of our newest members - Kalpesh - has been given #8354.
The thing I dont understand is this -
8354 minus 5292 = 3062. Does this mean we have had an increse of 3062 members since I joined ??
When you look at the membership stats at the bottom of the front page of the BC Forum it tells you there is only 6711 members......
I'm confused

so who is member number 1 ?

The number system is not perfect, but this is how I understand it.
When Mr. New member wants to join, he clicks the activation link. The next step in the process includes assigning Mr New Member a member number (lets say member #9876) and an activation E-mail is sent. When he clicks the activation E-mail, the system confirms that they are a real person, and is allowed to make a post. There are many different ways to assure that no two members have the same member number because the server sees this member as their number. If Mr. New member posts for a while, and starts breaking the rules, and {in the extreme case} is banned, his number can not be reused.
Lets say that Mrs. New Member wanted to join as well. In the process, she is assigned the next number in line (#9877). Something happens and she does not post for several days. She forgets all about even being a registered member, and continues to different sites, without ever making a post here at BC. The server has to keep the number 9877 available (like a placeholder) for Mrs New Member so that when she logs in at BC it is the same person. In the case that she does not have it clicked that it logs her in automatically (using cookies for her password and such), then she may even go read different threads, tutorials, and never make a post. Once again, the number stays assigned to her.
As far as Grinler being number 3, that is something that he would have to answer.
If I am not correct in my descriptions, then please let me know. Every forum is different on how members are handled.

"MrSnausage" (I think I spelled that correctly) was #1.
I've not seen him around in quite awhile.
MrsGrinler is #2!
ergo... #3 = grinler

//Edit: I forgot to say...
If an individual never responds to the validation e-mail that they are sent upon
signing up, then the system still assigns that particular number to that individual
but does not count it in the field of validated members. Many have never validated
their membership and that is the reason for the large difference in the numbers one sees.

MrSnausage and Grinler = Same person (ME)
As Jason said, numbers can not be reused. So if someone joins and gets banned, deleted, asked to be removed, or does not validate their account, that member id can never be reused.
As for the amount of member who have joined since mid november, its very possible we have had close to that many new members

Thats a great result.
I've not seen such a large increase in membership like this on other forums in such a short space of time, not that I use others much anymore, I find I am addicted to you guys now and the level of knowledge and courtesy is second to none. Perhaps thats why we are getting sooo many new members each day.
Well done everybody

Thanks for clearing this up Jason & Grinler.

Hee hee hee... MrSnausage used to be my old AIM name, but was not sure what connotations people would ascribe to it here, so I stopped using it.
For the record, its a complete reference to those fantastic snausages commcercials that I remember from growing up !
Thanks JackTheHaack! We are working hard to get this site bigger and better every day!
