For a limited time, Sun is offering a free DVD media kit which includes the Solaris 10 Operating System for both SPARC and x86 platforms as well as Sun Studio 11 software.

Take this opportunity to get familiar with the most advanced operating system on the planet and the tools which enable the highest optimizations and best runtime performance on the Solaris Operating System, bar-none.

Sun Studio software provides optimizing C, C++ and Fortan compilers, visual performance tools, and high performance libraries to enhance your Solaris development environment.
Get 'em while they're hot.

Thanks arcman, that's just awesome. I've lost my third disk (and maybe the fifth, i can't remember how many there were)..... plus you can't beat a REAL set of disks. Cheers!
BlackSpyder
May this not turn out like the Miscrosoft free usb drive. But Sun has never let me down yet.

Is Solaris like Windows XP as far as the layout or is it like Linux?
arcman
Solaris is an official Unix proper, so it will share some similarities with Linux.
It's more a server-oriented OS, so the driver support isn't quite as wide as Linux, but definitely worth looking into if you want to broaden your experience in *nix.

Will Solaris run on a laptop?
arcman
Yes, it'll run on a laptop. x86/x64 architectures are supported.
In fact it looks like they have a laptop compatibility chart.

If you have any decent Linux skills, the eyecandy is free.
acklan
I ordered the disk but has not come in. Has anyone received the promised free Solaris DVD?
BlackSpyder
not me been waiting since my 1st post 1/16/07
arcman
Still waiting on mine, too. >:(
cybormoron

Well I am kind of late but the offer is still good I will say if I have recieved it at all.

Jombee
Still haven't gotten mine either.

It said wait from 2-4 weeks, have you been waiting that long?

-Steve
acklan
Hmm... this is the four week for me.

Well lets hope it comes in if not I'll send you a copy of M-DOS for free when I finish getting a couple more bugs out lol

No joy here either sad.gif

Nothing is free any more I guess...
acklan
If you are tired of waiting here it is. Sun's Solaris 10 Free Download
acklan
Aaahhh! Be warned. The Sun procedures to allow you to download Solaris is a pain. Not hard, just time consuming. The download it's self consists of 5 separate downloads totaling 2.5 GBs.
It is worth it, just not as easy as click click poof it's there.
arcman
You'd think they'd just set up a mirror for an ISO, I think even a torrent would be better than the hodgepodge they have set up. Ah well. Their Sun download manager seems functional, at least.
acklan
It is the marketing data they want. Your name address, and other details every company drools over and generally pays big bucks for.
BlackSpyder
Is ther a torrent available (checking into it myself will get back if I find one)
acklan
I doubt you will find an authorized site. Althought it is free it is still copy right protected. Be careful where you download from.
arcman
I got tired of waiting too, downloaded the ISO and burned it.
I haven't installed it to a system yet, but I did boot it up to check it and see what the installer was like. The installer itself seems very clean and professional. It's been a while since I installed a recent Unix, but this was better than what I remember doing for FreeBSD.
cybormoron
well i tried playing around with this today. i guess it isn't meant to be for me. wacko.gif had nothing but problems. mostly my fault i guess. here's the story if y'all want something to read.
i registered with a new id so i could download the iso zip images. as soon as i clicked the submit button i had a power failure. my whole house shutdown and came back on. i was able to start my computer back up ok. not a good sign to start with. my registration went thru so i was able to download the images, no problem. i got the files extracted ok, also. then i ran the cat command to make the iso image and the konsole starts executing the files as binary files. i didn't get them typed in the proper order or something, duh. had to reboot to kill the konsole. ok, lets try this again. i downloaded them to a partition with only 9 gb's of space. after extracting them i have only 3 gb's left. i didn't know this so i continued with the cat command to make the iso image. it fails because it needs over 3gb's. so i clean up my drive and make some space. 3rd times the charm crazy.gif got a good iso to burn. it burned ok. the 5 zip files are about 3gb total. when you extract them it takes up another 3 gb. then over 3 gb more space again when you make the iso image. so make sure you have at least 10 or 12 gb's to work with if you download these.
ok, let's stick this thing in the cup holder on my test box and see what happens. it appears to be booting ok but it freezes before the welcome screen. it gave me no indication it was froze. a window said it was completing the configuration. so i wait about 15 minutes before realizing it's frozen. had to hard shutdown to try again. tried 6 times till i found the correct boot option. finally i see a welcome screen. the default boot options won't work on this machine.
ok, let's go thru this installer and see what happens. language, time zone, domain, dns, no problems till i get to the partition screen. it doesn't recognize the partitions i have on this box. i can't figure out how to make fdisk see my current partitions and i don't want to repartition this disk so this is where i give up.
so this is probably a great distro and i would like to see it but circumstances are against me. maybe if i had another empty computer to try it on it might work ok. it was fun trying but i gotta move on to the next distro. i'm going to install fc6 on one of my partitions. i already have mandriva, elive, opensuse, slackware, and ubuntu on here. got room for 3 more.

i hope y'all have better luck than i. i'm sure it's a good distro.
acklan
Sound like you need a break before continuing to try the install. Here is a Sun reference page that may help.

cybormoron
thanks acklan, but i think i'm just gonna put this one aside for now. i could probably get it going but there's too many other distros to play with, lool. maybe till i get another test box to put it on. so many distros, so little time, loool. hysterical.gif i found some other doc pages from your your above link if anyone else is interested.

Hi everyone:
For me, the first Monday after this post will mark the 30th business day. No luck so far.
EddieT.H.
Well i just got mine in the mail right now
kaialii
Finally, after 37 business days of waiting, my disks arrived yesterday. clapping.gif
Jesse Bassett
I got my copy in the mail..... but since I am using Vista and my wireless cards aren't supported in Solaris, I will just sell the discs at our next garage sale. Maybe some IT guy will pick them up.
arcman
Your wireless card isn't on an compatibility list?
Jesse Bassett

Nope. Same goes for Linux. I have yet to find a Linux distro that supports the Intel Pro/Set 3945ABG wireless network card. Even if I were to find one, I paid a lot of money for Vista, so I'm sticking with it.
Joedude
Just what the boys at Redmond love to hear.
BlackSpyder
3 months and no disks just like the microsoft free usb
Uraiser
Just ordered mine. I've used linux before, but never Solaris. Shouldn't be that much of a difference though. Thanks for the link!

FWIW, from what I remember you didn't miss any thing with the free thumb drive as it was reportedly 16mb and loaded with a M$ presentation . and I don't remember more that a hand full of people who said they finally got one.
BlackSpyder
yeah I know but it was free
