I got a pop up notice to say C Drive can't be read.Run CHKDSK and recieved a page full of
(Recovering Orphaned Files ------into such and such file directory.
My question is What has caused this?Is it anything I have done? Can it be prevented in the future?
I am a dummy when it comes to PC's and would like an answer in laymans terms please.

Yes,Similar Fozzie.Then set new restore point.Have written down details if required or relevent.

Oops my bad.. Me and my glases...

Before going to further measures please do following :

- Open "MY COMPUTER "
- Rightclick the drive
- Propperties
- Extra
- Click "check volume on errors"the top one
- Tick the two boxes and reboot. Take a few drinks but stay sober

- post back any reports or error emssages and at same time type of your HD

Did as you asked Fozzie,and I'm still sober

Report says volume is clean.
Says the HD is a Samsung SP201 4N. Partitioned 70/200. 129gb free space or 94%.Acronis True Image.
File System NFTS.
The 3 Questions answered would ease my mind.

OK Let's do this step by step. Download this programm. Follow these instructions and post back any result. As far as avoiding this the following :

Orphaned files are files which in general are left overs from uninstalling programs. If you are uninstalling you are most of the prompted that a file is not used any more but leaving it won't hurt. That are these files. I did not emphasize in general for nothing. There are some exceptions and these exceptions could kill your computer, so you need to do a thoruogh research what which file is doing what. My idea would be to create a seperate folder in the windows directory with these files so you have them in 1 place and after you have run the utility from samsung with no problems you run the chkdsk again to see whether they are all in that place now.

What has caused this? I dunno - could be you, could be cosmic rays, could be problems with the disk, etc.

Is it anything I have done? Maybe, to hard to tell at this point. But most likely it isn't something that you've done.

Can it be prevented in the future? Monitor the hard drive for errors periodically. Check the SMART status of the hard drive periodically (here's a free utility: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php ) But, most importantly, backup your data. If this is a sign that your hard drive is failing - then you'll have your important stuff saved already.

You can also use one of these free utilities to diagnose your Samsung drive:

Thanks heaps usasma,will do. Yesterday a popup for Adobe popped up in the task bar.I clicked on it to download what I presumed was a later version,and the monitor froze.No response from anything.Had to hard shut off at wall.Restarted and is going great as soon as I restarted.Maybe just odd I had the CHKDSK
and the Adobe popups come up within 60 sec of each other.Once again thanks for the links.

YES, just me,it is.It's only 6 months old.I didn't mention that my PC freezes about 2 times on a daily basis for some reason.I hard shut off each time,and then restart an it goes great again.Don't seem to hear any noises coming from the HD.Does anybody think the HD is on the way out?
I have a new 80 gb HD sitting here.Should I use the 80 GB for acronis and buy another 200 GB for normal operation?I just had a look at the HD and there are red and blue files still sitting way out by themselves,but windows says defrag is not necessary.

Don't worry about the specific location of the files - that's way beyond our abilities, and it won't contribute significantly (IMO) to the performance of your system.

I musta missed the Acronis references previously. I'd suggest using the 80 gB for Acronis images as long as you don't want to store more than 80 gB of images. This'll depend on the size of your "imaged" drive and the amount of stuff that you have on it (in other words, there won't be a whole bunch of room on an 80 gB drive for an image of a 250 gB drive - without a whole heaping pile of compression!)
