Hi everyone,

I just click green mark on the right bottom to stop a flash drive.
It shows "The device "generic volume" can not stopped right now. Try stopping the device again late."

What's the problem? Can I pull out it straight away?

Many thanks

Something is still accessing the drive - so removing it may corrupt the data that's on it. Try closing all open processes and programs to see if it'll let you remove it then. If you want to just "yank" it, you should set it to "Optimize for fast removal"

Thank you John,

How to set it to "Optimize for fast removal"?

Right click on the drive in My Computer and it'll be on one of the tabs there. It also may be on the "Properties" of the device in Device Manager.

This is one way:

Start > Control panel > If in Windows XP Category view, click Performance and Maintenance > System > in the "System properties" window click the "Hardware" tab > In the Device Manager section click " Device Manager" > In the options tree, expand "Disk Drives" (left click on the + (plus sign) in front of "Disk Drives" > right click on the drive in question and select "Properties" > click the Policies tab. Select whatever options you want.

Your best bet however is just finding what is keeping the flash drive open. It can even be a Windows Explorer session that you displayed the drive with and did not click on another drive before clicking on Safely Remove Hardware.
