every time i try to install the final version of IE7 i get an error message that says"installation cannot complete.please reboot to undo any changes made to your system".and it puts a trouble shooting guide on my desktop.i have even tried safemode but it still won't install.i had no problems with the rc1 beta version.any ideas ?.

Did you uninstall the beta?

I would get the machine back to IE 6 before trying to install ie7

yes i uninstalled the beta version no problem.

ie6 is working ok.

From the looks of your log, it appears something is preventing IE7 from writing to your registry.
ZoneAlarm is a known cause of that issue. If you have ZoneAlarm installed, remove it prior to installation of IE7. Temporarily shutdown all running apps as well.

Using Regmon you should be able to find which registry keys are being accessed and from there setup the proper permissions needed to get this installed.

Ok lets backup a step. If you can't figure out Regmon then I suspect that you overlooked something in the Microsoft KB article I sent you.

Please . Click Start, click Run, type %windir%\ie7.log, and then click OK to open the ie7.log file.

Note By default, the ie7.log file is located in the C:\Windows folder.
b. Press CTRL+END to move to the end of the ie7.log file.
c. On the Edit menu, click Find.
d. In the Find what box, type IECUSTOM: Key is still unwriteable.
e. Under Direction, click Up, and then click Find Next.

Post here any of those you find.

Everything I am reading says this is a registry permissions issue.

Open up Regedit and drill down to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

Right click hit Permissions and tell me what you see.

read+full control are ticked.but the boxes are greyed out.

For what users. It should have several.

admin/read/full control
me/user name/read/full control
restricted/read only
system/read/full control.

One last thing to try.

Install in safe mode. I've seen several articles saying that you might fix it by doing that.

still won't install.

I agree. Your copy of windows is damaged. I think you'll have other problems. I would reinstall windows.

i think that means it installs a new copy of windows over the old one.
