Howdy,

Are smilies and icons built into Outlook Express 6 ?? I navigated around and found none.

If not, could you please recommend a site I could download some from ?

Once downloaded where should I store them so they would be readily available when I am typing an E-mail ?

I would like to add some to my E-mails from time to time.

I would not sugjest downlaoding as most smiles or emoticons will come with alot of junk but here is a google search witg some sites

Thanks you for your reply Siggyman. I take it then that there are no built in smiles, Etc... in OutLook Express 6.

I also had done a google search, but did not want to download anything until I checked in with this site first. I have learned my lesson the hard way and it hurt.

I thought perhaps someone on Bleeping Computer was using them in their E-mails and could direct me to a safe sight to download from.

Although I certainly do not approve of Smilies anywhere, let alone in E-mails, I believe Mozilla's Thunderbird does have a limited number of smilies built in, and I am sure there are safe extensions for additional ones.

May I ask why you disapprove of the smilies ? Is it considered discourtious, a threat (virus, malware, etc..) something else ?? Just curious.

We have 22 grand children and my wife gets a kick out of staying in touch with them all via E-mail.

My wife asked me if there is a way to add them to our E-mails.

Thats why I checked in here.

One rather unorthodox thing I do is "steal" things like animated smilies, art work, sigs, etc. by copying and pasting them into a draft email that I never send! If I have a use for them, I just copy and paste again into an email or whatever. I probably have more than a 100 items on one draft email. There is a ton of smilies on the page I am on right now.

I have a few saved in" My Pictures". (Windows XP, SP2 IE7) I have downloaded them into Photobucket and have used them in that way.

Could you please explain what you mean by by pasting them in a draft email ?? As in how to do that and then how retrieve them when needed.

This is my typical scenario.

Go to Outlook Express 6 and initiate an email.
Type in a few words and then be in need of a smilie.
I would then go to my favorites and click on Photobucket.
I would then Log in and then go to my albums.
I would then click on the smilie of my choice and cut it.
I would then go back to my email using the back button.
I would then paste the smilie in the email.

WHEW, anybody as out of breath as I am.

My guess there is a better way.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

As I am sure you can appreciate by now, I am not computer wise. Should you decide to give me a hand in this matter, please act as if you are talking to a 5 year old. Maybe I will be able to comprehend.

When you click on OE6 to read mail, click on "inbox" and you will see a list of folders. The last on the list is "Drafts". When you see a smiley you like just highlight it and copy it. Open OE and start a new message. Paste the smiley into the message and then click the X in the upper right hand corner to close. A window will pop up and ask if you want to save the info. Click yes. You just created a "draft". Whenever you want to add more smileys, repeat the process except instead of starting a new email, just open the draft and paste the new smileys into the draft email. You will notice that the more smileys, etc. that you put into the draft the slower it will be to open. I am talking extra seconds not minutes.
Whenever you want to include a smiley in an email just open the draft and copy and paste whatever smiley you want to use into the new email.
You can start your collection when you reply to this. Just copy all of the smileys that are on the right. You copy all of them at once or select the ones you like.

Well, here are the results. IT WORKED.

In brief, I disapprove of Smilies in E-mails (at least between adults) because most people tend to overuse them, dotting every paragraph with five or six of them to the point of distracting from whatever they are writing, and because these use bandwidth and take additional E-mail storage space.
There are very sound security reasons for setting your E-mail client to read messages only in plain text; smilies, fancy backgrounds, etc., will not even appear.
Now, of course, E-mails to precious GRANDCHILDREN are a different story!

Actually I tend to agree with you. I have seen some posts with as many as 20 10 30 of them in the text.

I went up a couple of replies and counted 5 in one of my replies to buddy225. I am going to try to cut back on them.
