I am very new at this, so whoever decides to take on the task to help me, please assume I do not even know my own name. I can not get my cd roms drives to work. The computer shows them mounted, but I can't play anything off of them, not even my Mandrake 10.1 install disks. I have the free version or "community" version of Mandrake 10.1, running off of KDE. I do not even know where to type in my commands. All I know is that I hate Microsoft, so I hope I came to the right place. Will someone help me???? Thanks,

I am going to build a computer soon, and am trying the free version to make sure I like it and can handlle it. Once I put together my new computer, I am going to Purchase linux system (usable with AMD 64). Even if you don't know mandrake, please offer some suggestions- thanks again

Can you provide some more info?
When you insert the disk and click the cdrom icon on the desktop you can not browse the CD?
You can't play music CD's?
These are regular CD's or CD-R/RW?

I don't have a CdRom icon on my desktop. The only place I know where they are both at is in my system configuration tool area, the place where I have to type my root password to get into. Let me try a plain music cd and see what happens... I'll be back

No, there are no icons anywhere for either cd rom drive. Says either I have no DVD or I need a plugin for DVD and CD it says No CD wrong path to device??? How do I change the path. I am soooo confused. I hope I am not alone in having these problems. I feel stupid on this sytem. I am using Kaffiene to get these error messages, by the way. If you could tell me all the things I need to check out, I will spend the time typing everything up, and telling you each thing that is going on with my system. Just tell me where to find it and what info you need, and I'll look it all up. Thanks for the help, you're a lifesaver-

So, I got icons out there on my desktop (don't ask me how). The Cd-RW (master) is labeled: CD-ROM (hdb) [/mnt/cdrom]. The DVD (slave) is labeled: CD-ROM (hdc) [/mnt/cdrom2]. The DVD plays songs, only after it says no device found etc. The CDRW does nothing. Here is as much as I know.

Do you have KsCD or XMMS installed under the KDE menu - Multimedia - Sound?
It looks to me that Kaffiene is in it's infancy (0.5 version) I personally have never used it since
MDK comes with Totem,KsCD,XMMS and MPlayer.
Also check to see if you have the audio cable connected from the CDROM to the mother board.
You probably have one from the DVD to the MOBO, but you'll need both if you want sound from both.

My internal hardware is fine. Let's just focus on the DVD drive right now. Firstly, I dowloaded Totem, and cannot install the damn thing. Is there any easy point and click way. If not, how do I type the code in and where. Where should I put it in my system? Second, once installed, will it just appear somewhere, or do I have to find it? Any other suggestions??? Thanks

Type Totem in the box
alternative: click on workstation - multimedia station and see all the offerings to install.
Package Manager will find and install the dependencies and Totem will be on the menu under Multimedia - Sound

I downloaded all the libs I needed so i could download totem. My problem is that it asks for my Installation 1 disc, and the CD rom opens up, but after a couple seconds, it pops out and says it can't read it or there is no media in there yada yada yada> What do I do now????? It's like a catch 22, I need totem to read cds, but in order to get totem, I need a cd to be able to work. South Park says, "You bastards". I do understand now how to install things, though, which is good. Thanks, let me know-

Wait, I got totem on now, I jsut changed my cd names, using my DVD player as my master. I think my cdrw drive is screwed up. So unless I figure this one out, how do I view my movie, because it still doesn't read it on totem?

What kind of movie? Are you trying to watch a DVD?
If its a DVD you will need libdvdcss and possibly libdvdread.

Disclaimer - It is still illegal to watch DVD's on Linux.

If its an mpeg,avi,or wmv you may need some plugins.

I don't care that it is illegal. It is a stupid law. I downloaded both libdvdcss and libdvdread. Still nothing. Bottom line is that I purchased a DVD and a DVD player, I should be allowed to view the damn thing. I even downloaded totem, hoping this would help. Still, nothing. Side question, do you suggest mandrake or red hat??? Just curious.

When the console opens type - totem
After totem opens click Movie - Play DVD
and post back the messages that spill out in the terminal window.

I have used Mandrake since 8.2.I tried RedHat, SuSe, YOS, Xandros and some others, but never liked them as much as MDK.

it says libdvdcss is not on my system. I know I downloaded it. I even tried to install it again, but it doesn't show up when I search for it in the install area. I just get the message are trying to play an encrypted DVD without the libdvdcss program. blah blah. I think I am one step away. Is there anything I need to do or with libdvdcss after installation? I even tried mounting the DVD when in the system and got this reply...

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc,
or too many mounted file systems
Please check that the disk is entered correctly.

Double click the file you downloaded,enter your root password and click install...it will probably complain about incorrect signature,just click install and you should be good to go.

Or if you want to do it the cool Linux way:
Open your konsole,type su enter the root password,type:
rpm -Uvh ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/PLD/current/dists....2.6-1.i686.rpm

Is there any place I can download good free games for this system?
I am building a new computer soon using AMD 64 technology. Will this speed up my system, and does Mandrake Linux work well with it?
