just wondering how many people have already tried vista,Right now i have vista on my computer so my vote is a yes.
cowsgonemadd3
No I dont.

Will it be worth the upgrade for a few new graphics and maybe some better security?

What do you think?
J_pyro_C
so far i havent found anything worth the upgrade.they have cut out so many things that would make it worth while to upgrade but as of now no its just not really worth it.the graphics may be nice but it slows down your computer alot.
I would not upgrade until SP2 or something like that when they have all the things that they were originaly going to be in Vista.

Josh

I've just counted up my Vista builds and I've got 12 of them! I've run Vista on my home desktop (P4 3.0 gHz Prescott and AGP video) and on my Toshiba M45 laptop (only the earlier builds).

I'm going to build a new system for Vista - just waiting for things to settle down at home before I start spending all that money!
J_pyro_C
Im going to do the same around christmas, things should be cheaper by then, since just about every week the prices go down.most likely im going to get:
CPU:AMD Athlon 64 3500+

Case:ENERMAX 400W PS BK S5271BFSBK Case

Motherboard:ASUS A8N-E Motherboard - Socket 939 NF4 Ultra ATX PCI-E

Memory:PATRIOT 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR400 Memory - CL2.5 (PSD1G400K)

Video Card:Nvidea Geforce 6500 256mb

hard drive:WESTERN DIGITAL 200GB 7200RPM Hard Drive - 8MB Cache, IDE ATA100

Should all of this work?

all of this is $474.95(USD)

Thanks,
Josh

I will be adding Vista to a new build after the first of the year.
If only initially to learn the ins and outs, and to try to help others as they acquire it too.
J_pyro_C
oh and usasma, thats a lot of Vista Builds.lol I only have one.poor me.

I dunno if the mobo has SATA slots, but I'd get a SATA II drive in preference to an IDE.

I've been a Microsoft beta tester for about a year now. Towards the end, they were releasing the betas faster than I could install them on my system!
J_pyro_C
is there any difference like in hooking up the hard drives?any size diffrences?
(ive never even seen a sata drive.lol)

Thanks,
Josh
J_pyro_C
and somehow i doubt that only 3 people on this whole forum have vista but i guess people are just not in to voting.lol.or maybe only 3 have it.(doubt it though.)

I also have a copy on a test computer. Seems to work okay. My test computer is 3 years old and it seems to use a lot of resources without anything besides the OS running. At work, we normally wait until some time has passed before we start thinking of installing a new OS on everyone's computer. I think with this release, we will install only when new computers are purchased - instead of using a mass upgrade. We never really had any show stoppers with Windows 2000 in our environment. In fact, after all the years that XP has been around, we just started introducing it to our work environment.

If you just want to do the basics with your computer, why upgrade to Vista unless you have a specific need to do so, or a new computer has a license for it. Personally, I want to use it since I enjoy helping others with computers. Also, being a techie geek, it is hard to resist a new version of an OS. We've come a long way since MS-DOS...

With all the hullabaloo from Symantic and McAfee (and perhaps a host of other security companies) about MS's seeming unwillingness to co-operate with them and enforcing a MS monopoly on Vista computer security, and some other MS "rules" for Vista use, I fully intend to wait until I spend money to buy it. Quite frankly, in order to meet financially-driven milestones, MS is offering a new version without many new, and needed, enhancements (I am particularly thinking here of the touted new files system that is needed as hard drives become ever larger and more applications and data are commonly stored on them), except a pretty GUI interface.

John

SATA is a PITA for those motherboards without native SATA support (like my Asus P4P800 SE) - but the newer boards are coming with built-in support, which makes life much easier!

The SATA drives require a different power connector and use different cables from IDE. You can get a power dongle that'll convert the 4 pin molex from the PSU to the SATA.
J_pyro_C
ok well ill figur all that out around christmas through january.

Much Thanks,
Josh

I'm running Vista RC1 on my primary pc, and it's more stable than XP *gasp*

Ive been using it quite a bit lately but as a VMware virtual machine. So far I am digging it though they did make a it a little more clicky to get to certain functions.

I just got rid of Windows 2000 on my workstation for Windows XP last week. I have no plan to move to Vista. When I get settled in our new Phoenix office I plan on switching my personal workstations to Linux and I'll just let everyone deal with Windows (actually, they will still probably call me).

So far I just don't see what added benefit Vista offers. It's pretty, sure, but coming from someone that doesn't even run KDE or Gnome because it's too flashy, it should be easy to see that I'm not moved by aesthetics. Then I look at security and remember that XP is still currently supported, and since I run software firewall and av along with a hardware firewall, I'm not extremely worried about that either. To date I've only had a single attack on my network (that amounted to anything) and they only gained user access to my unpatched Slackware server. I've since fixed it up and been good for months.

Vista has tons more security, and it's alot more stable.

I've got Vista RTM (technet subscribers get it first....:D ) but to make the best use of it I'm going to have to build a new system.

For a single-user PC though I can't justify the expense.

By "make the best of it" do you mean take advantage of the eye-candy? If so, do you think that it is worth upgrading hardware for?

Eye candy and speed. Transparent menus and gadgets are cool but hardly worth an upgrade for. But Some of the eye candy might actually improve usability. I tend to have multiple programs open, the small preview screens that show up when you hover over the programs in the task bar help remind me which program is doing what. The dynamic search functions are much better and basically replace the need for google desktop.

I haven't used it enough to say that you definitely need to upgrade. I'm upgrading because I HAVE too. I sell and service PCs. I can't do that without learning about vista. Like it or not it is here and people are going to use it.

Ahh yes. That is the one reason that I will eventually get on the Vista wagon too. But, since I manage the systems for our company, I can safely say that I won't be seeing Vista on a large-scale in 2007. Heck, some of the companies that we work with just moved to XP last year!

I am going to install the rtm this week i think.

Is the build up on MSDN the RTM build?

I don't have MSDN but as I understand it it should be. MSDN usually gets it when Technet does.
usasma
The MSDN copy of the RTM build was posted a while back (on the 17th I think) - There's a huge link on the MSDN home page for it. http://msdn.mcrosoft.com

From what I've seen, there's several things that make Vista worthwhile:
1) the graphics (not just the eye candy - but the processing of graphics)
2) the error reporting tools are greatly improved.
3) the driver installation wizard is good. It detected my TV card, then asked permission to go looking for drivers, found them and installed them - all without my specifying anything.
4) improved security (even tho' the UAC is a real PITA at times)
5) Vista systems should hit the market in a day or two - we should start seeing questions on them real soon.

FWIW - I've got Vista on dual boot right now, but I'm going to use it full-time on my new system (in preparation for it's release to the public) and will run XP in a VM for answering questions on it.

I thought Vista was not being released for sale until Jan 1 ... your saying people can buy systems now and get it before that with vista installed?

Also the parental controls are very nice. I will be writing tutorials on alot of the Vista features soon.

Retail Launch date is Jan 31st. Not the 1st. That for boxed copies on the shelves at Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples, Wal-mart, and so on.

Gold OEMs are getting now to roll out for systems to be sold in January. DSP OEMs (aka whitebox builders) will not get it until Jan 31st.
Grinler
OK..so then come Jan 1st...vista will be in the hands of the multitudes. God save us..hehe
DemonSui
Yes, because you know Vista's gonna be forced upon us, seems they do that with every operating system they've brought out past 95/98. and this one's really expensive...

More like the last two weeks in Jan. M$ wants the big OEMs to roll out around the 31st but some always leak out.

My mistake, I read the press releases incorrectly. Sorry! sad.gif

No, I don't have Vista. I've tried Vista Beta 2 and didn't like it at all. It's just a spiced up version of Windows XP.
oldf@rt
I have 5 different builds, including RTM lots of eye candy, nothing special, just the same old XP, repackaged.

needs a lot more ram I would recommend minimum 2 gig to run effectively, the machine that I have loaded it on is an emachine with 1 gig ram, and it is immediately using the swap file, even with missing drivers.

Old rule of thumb take M$ recommended minimum and multiply by four 512 x4 = 2 gig

I think I wait until SP 1 is released!!

I'm lucky if I can get XP to do what I want, and I'd rather spend money on games, so no, I don't have Vista
Serious Dave
i want to keep WinXP for 10 more years...but they are only making DX10 for Vista thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

>>>from my first and only look<<<
----------------------------------------
THINGS I HATE ABOUT VISTA:

1. all the new things look like spyware

2. IE7 sucks...wont delete all cookies...bad buttons and layout (i was happy with IE6 and its problems)

3. i dont need parental controls

4. it look like they are trying to make it look like Mac OSX (i went with windows due to the fact that its not a apple)

5. i bet i cant make it look like WinXP (color maybe, buttons and layout hell no)

6. i want speed not slow me down eye candy trash

---------------------------------------

if i can do these things i will be happy:

1. uninstall all the crap i dont need

2. go back to IE6

3. make it look and act like WinXP but with Vista colors (black is cool)

4. have the Win98 start menu
