ok i'm hopeless with computers so sorry if this is a silly question but i recently bought a compaq computer and would like to install extra ram memory to it. its currently 512mb and would like to double it but i don't know how many pin it is. is there any way of finding out?

If there was any documentation with your computer, read it. If not, go to hp.com and search for your computer there.

The easiest way is to use Everest to determine what you already have installed and then use the wizard at Crucial.com

just go to crucial, look up your model of your computer and the web site will have complete information on the memory of your exact model.
this includes how many slots, maximum memory supported, and the exact type.
