I hev a friend that called me over to her house to see why her CD tray woul not open. I turned on the pc and the light beside the cd tray wasn't blinking like it usally does, so i looked in the computer file and no D drive for her cds, and then i opend wm player and clicked on the cd button and it said no cd drive is present. I am not sure what she has done but she said she "cleaned out her pc" because she had a virus so i dont know if she deleted it or if a very bad virus corrupted it. I would gladly have run her windows cd again to try to repair it but if her cd drive is not working what can be done. Any help would be appreciated!!!!

Cleaning out the PC can certainly remove things you didn't want to remove. How did she "clean" it?

There are a couple of things here that should be checked. First, you need to look in the Device Manager and see if you can find any CD-Rom drives in there. Use the Windows key and the Pause/Break key to open the system properties. (The Windows key is the one with the Windows picture on it - the Pause key is up on the top right somewhere.) Click on the Device Manager tab and see if there are any drives listed. Since CD-Roms are ATAPI devices, or at least, I assume this one isn't SCSI or something, they don't require any special drivers.

There's always a chance that the cable came loose to the drive, or failed. And there's even the chance the the CD-Rom itself failed. You need to be able to see the cables and check for tightness, and look for any problems like a damaged cable.

If there is power to the drive, the drawer should open. Check the power plug, too, and be aware that the power supply could be failing if there's nothing wrong with the molex power plug. (That's the white one in the back of the CD-Rom)
