Full Version: Mcafee Siteadvisor Acting Against Ff?!?

Elendil
Recently, I updated my Firefox to version 1.5.06 and checked to make sure all of my extensiosn & themes were working properly; everything was ok.

Then yesterday, I checked for extension updates and found out that McAfee SiteAdvisor had an update, so updated it. It was late at night yesterday when I updated it, so I didn't restart firefox to upgrade SiteAdvisor; however, today, when I started up FF, McAfee SiteAdvisor displays no color for any websites. And, when I click on SiteAdvisor to see a website's rating, it tells me that the website is Unknown!!!! Even pages like Yahoo and Google come up blank... is anyone else having issues as well?
KoanYorel
I just got the SiteAdvisor up date also and have no problems with it in Fx or IE.

You might want to click on the SiteAdvisor Icon showing in Fx and then on
settings and make sure that the items are checked that you want to use.
buddy215
when I updated to 23 Site Advisor no longer worked. I removed the program and reinstalled and it works. Tried to update in IE and could get no response. Weird.

Update: I deleted site advisor in IE and reinstalled. I got a popup after reinstallation that said "We are experiencing communication problems now"

I am having the same issues after update 23 Elendil.
There are a couple of threads about this in the Firefox forum, and I guess we are the lucky ones as some cannot use their firefox after the last update! So I am kind of afraid to uninstall/reinstall.Sounds like it's work in progress, think I'll contact McAfee via e-mail and see what kind of responds I get back.
TMacK
A little update Elendil,no pun intended!
I tried a few things, first I uninstalled Site Advisor and reinstalled Version 21. It worked just fine.
Did some more readin and it was recommended to download from the uk.mcafee.com website,so uninstalled again and tried that.
Pleased to report that version 23 is up and working like it should be. thumbup2.gif
I did send off an e-mail to McAfee,by the sounds of all the problems users are reporting they'll be a while gettin back to me!
Elendil
I have no clue what happened (maybe it had something to do with me switching themes?), but after I turned on my computer from its long hibernation and fired up Firefox, SiteAdvisor is working now blink.gif

What on Earth is going on?!?!?!?! SiteAdvisor isn't working anymore!!! blink.gif huh.gif mad.gif

I actually feel its McAfee, mine isnt working either at the moment.

This actually happened to me about 3 weeks ago for a while, using version 22, which had been on my system for ages. But, it just stopped working. The next day when i loaded up, it worked fine. A week later, it did it again, and since has been fine until about an hour ago!

EDIT:
Im now running update 23,was fine earlier, but gone again. Like i said though, it started to do this for short periods on the previous version.
graveangel
Ok, heres an update for anyone suffering the same issue.

In order to use version 23 without problems, you must first uninstall siteadvisor. Then go to the website and download again like you did first time around and this will install version 23, and you will be pleased to know, it will then work without any problems.

It would appear that 22 can not quite make the jump up to 23, which is why we have had problems.
I hope this helps anyone who has found this a little annoying!
KoanYorel
Thanks gravelangel for the update and repair info.

I've yet to have experience any problems, but I've passed your info on to
an acquaintance who did have the same irritating symptoms.
TMacK
Yup,that worked for me a couple of posts ago.

graveangel
TMacK, you did indeed point this out, many sorrys for misreading wacko.gif your info! Well pointed out in your original post! smile.gif

I still wish to add though, that it is recommended to all to do a fresh install regardless, as some site advice may not be fully correct even after an update!

Safe browsing all!

No apologies required graveangel.

Well, I cannot get the extension to download at all, and I don't have one to uninstall. It tries to download, but when I get the first installation message, there is text in red that says it's unsigned. I click okay anyway, and wait for a very long time, and then I get this message:

The first two times, I went directly to this site: http://www.siteadvisor.com/download/ff_preinstall.html

The third time, I am in the process of trying it, I started at this site: http://uk.mcafee.com/ but in order to install the download, I wound up at the site I originally went to. Thus far, I have received the same red text that the installation is unsigned, and I have a strong hunch, I am going to have the same conclusion.

Edit: It did have the same conclusion. What is the problem?

Are you using the extension NoScript? You would have to enable all the sites scripts to successfully download SiteAdvisor.
A Cache file is likely blocking Firefox from unpacking and reading the SiteAdvisor install. To correct:
Clear Firefox's cache, and retry the SiteAdvisor install from the following page: http://www.siteadvisor.com/download/ff_preinstall.html
And just incase, this is SiteAdvisors Support Site.
I use SiteAdvisor and couldn't live without it!

.

I don't have that extension, and I have all mobile script allowed for the site in my firewall.

I have JavaScript enabled in my browser settings, but in the Advanced menu, I do not have checks in anything. Do I need to put checks in any of those boxes for it to install? Do I need to enable Java for it to install? I do not have Java enabled in my browser unless I absolutely have to.

Cache is empty, and I still have the problem: I just retried with the same results. The only thing in Temp files are WGA and ZoneAlarm logs as far as I can see. I don't know how that would cause a problem.

I know you need Java Script for sure, but you could try it with enabling Java also.
In their support site, there is a "Contact Us" option you just might want to try.
Orange Blossom
Well, I went to the contact site, and got physical addresses plus additional links. Following to technical assistance got me a computerized tech. assistant which didn't tell me any more than you already had. The next stage of assistance takes one to the forums, so I have registered and asked the question on the site advisor forum, and hopefully I'll get an answer that solves the problem. I'm fairly certain it has something to do with my Firefox settings, but I don't know what. If I get a workable solution, I'll post the results.

Orange Blossom fruits_cherry.gif
TMacK
Please do that Orange Blossom, because that is very strange.
graveangel
Just a thought, but you might want to uninstall FireFox,then reinstall from the Firefox site, and then try installing SiteAdvisor again. If you have bookmarks saved, they should still remain after you delete FireFox, btu you could back them up before just incase.
Orange Blossom
Well, the McAfee forums have told me to go to the FireFox forums. They did find a post in another forum about someone with the same kind of error messages related to an extension installation, but the fix was specific to that extension. They also said that the problem was weird or strange.

I think I'll do the FireFox uninstall and reinstall next and see if that solves the problem. However, I'm going to hold off on that until I hear the results from my latest log in HJT so as not to confuse things. There is something weird on this beastie, but so far we've not been able to corner it, and there is, I suppose, a slim chance that whatever it is may be responsible - I don't know. All scans come out clean as well.

Update:

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox: that didn't work.

I tried installing it by using the Firefox safe mode version which I read solves extension installation problems, that didn't work.

I read that the following files - extensions.ini, extensions.cache, extensions.rdf - in the profile folder might cause the problem and to delete them. They would be regenerated. This didn't work.

I read that in about:config that xpinstall.enabled must read true and it is set to true.

I have posted the problem in the Mozilla Firefox forums and am awaiting responses. I'm beginning to think there is a gremlin in the computer preventing the installation of SiteAdvisor.

It also seems that there are no infection problems on the computer; therefore, it must be an invisible, intangible, computer gremlin playing tricks. dry.gif

Update: Firefox forums essentially told me to use a completely different extension. This is not what I would call a solution. sad.gif

I read the entire thread Orange Blossom, when I was over there looking for some answers.
It does seem like it's one of those problems without a solution. Certainly not for lack of trying on your part!
Will be interesting to see how this extension is integrated into the F/F release 2.0,as mentioned by one of the F/F forum members. No doubt you will be able to use it then, because it will be installed via a F/F update.

Problem solved. dance.gif It turns out that I had to have 2 sites allowed to use mobile code in my ZoneAlarm Privacy settings: not only www.siteadvisor.com which I had previously authorized but also www.mcafee.com. The second site needed to be authorized in order for the extension to be signed, at which point it properly downloaded and installed. Yeah!! smile.gif

Good News Orange Blossom! thumbup.gif
That never crossed my mind, and I even noted that I had to allow both sites in NoScript when I was researching the SiteAdvisor site.
Needless to say,I did not have NoScript at the time I installed my SiteAdvisor!
Enjoy!
KoanYorel
Thanks for filling us in on the fix. I've been scratching my head over this, as
I've had no problems with the SiteAdvisor or the NoScript programs interacting
with my Fx.
Orange Blossom
You're welcome.

I don't think I'd ever have solved it if I hadn't had the privacy advisor activated in ZoneAlarm. I suddenly noticed that it saying that scripts were being blocked when I was trying to download the extension which I thought was weird. I thought perhaps it was an embedded third party site, but when I clicked on more details, ZoneAlarm showed me the www.mcafee.com site, and I had my answer.

Now we've got more information in case someone else should have that problem.

Im glad its working now Orange Blossom, im sure your already seeing the benefits of having Siteadvisor.

hysterical.gif Im surprised non of us actually even thought about a conflict in some way being due to your firewall. Even though this has been an unusual case, firewalls are one of the first things i think of when trying to resolve strange problems like this, so i am sorry i never thought of it in the first place. Still, again, its sorted now, nice one!

Yes, I am, especially when I'm doing google searches as I can avoid questionable sites much more easily. I actually miss it on public computers.

Probably because I posted this:

Who would have thought I needed to allow two sites to use mobile scripts for a single download?

By the way, I posted the solution on the McAfee forums, and the person who was working with me there (I think a moderator, and he/she was as bewildered as everyone else about the problem.) suspects the second site - www.mcafee.com - became an issue since McAfee purchased siteadvisor. This leads me to suspect that in the past, only the siteadvisor site needed authorization for successful download.

There's an article on MozillaZine re SiteAdvisor & it's incompatibility with FF. Problems occur at installation or upon updating. There's a work around from Mozilla with a link to SiteAdvisor's solution. And there's always getting rid of it. Don't just update! If you put on a clean install read 1st. dry.gif

My Firefox updated itself today to v.1.5.0.8.

I'm using SiteAdvisor version 24.0 and haven't experienced any problems.

Both programs have continued to work fine.

The issues revolved around SiteAdvisor's installation & its updates, not Firefox's! My Firefox updated today too. Think it wants us to download FF 2! I think one new browser at a time is enough for now (just let IE 7 through).

Addendum --from MozillaZine:

Firefox may fail to open after installing or updating the McAfee SiteAdvisor Firefox extension [3] or after an update to McAfee software that includes the SiteAdvisor component [4]. According to this SiteAdvisor support article, the problem occurs because of a conflict between SiteAdvisor and automatic proxy configuration scripts in Firefox. Either end the firefox process that remains in memory, start Firefox in Safe Mode and uninstall the SiteAdvisor extension from the Tools -> Extensions window or follow the workaround given in the SiteAdvisor support article. If SiteAdvisor is installed as part of a McAfee software package such as McAfee Internet Security Suite, you can selectively remove just the SiteAdvisor component using the McAfee uninstaller, e.g., via Windows Add/Remove programs. [5].

Addendum --From McAfee:

Solution
There is currently a conflict between SiteAdvisor and automatic proxy configuration scripts in Firefox. To get SiteAdvisor installed you need to temporarily disable your automatic proxy configuration script.

If you have already used Firefox's safe mode to remove SiteAdvisor and want to reinstall it:
1. Install SiteAdvisor from: http://www.siteadvisor.com/download/ff_preinstall.html
2. Exit Firefox
3. Start Firefox in safe mode (Start, All Programs, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode)) and change the connection setting (Tools, Options, General tab, "Connection Settings") to "Direct connection to the Internet"
4. Exit and restart Firefox; you should be prompted to accept SiteAdvisor's license agreement
5. Return your connection setting to your automatic proxy configuration, then restart Firefox

If you are stuck and cannot start Firefox and want to get SiteAdvisor installed:
1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, (click Task Manager if it does not display), click the Processes tab in Task Manager, if "firefox.exe" is listed in the Processes list, click to select it then click the "End Process" button
2. Close Task Manager
