Hi vise.
I've been using AVAST for quite a while now and am very happy with it. It seems to update very regularly which is a big plus - the more often, the more uptodate.
If I am offline when it tries, I am greeted by a big red notification when I come back to my computer, and immediately manually update. Automatic updates only take a few seconds on my machine.
IMHO, you have a good thing going so stick with it. If it really annoys you that much, there are other good ones out there that can be picked up for free:

Avast searches for updates as soon as you connect to the Internet. You can use one of the options and change it to notify you before downloading but I don't recommend doing that. Just be patient and let the program update itself to ensure you have the max. protection.

Right click the avast icon in your system tray, click on program settings, then click on updates(basics)at left and select manual on the virus and program updates, then click OK.
