I've been getting illegal operation messages from IE and it was suggested I get FF and did. Now my computer is running crazy, jumping around and slow. Went to add/remove programs and tried to uninstall it and it won't let me. Went to Mozilla's site to try and find an uninstall option and could find none. Am still getting the illegal op messages - seems like the two are conflicting with each other. What a screwed up mess I've apparently created. HELP!!

Windows 98 SE

Thanks!

Have you tried to uninstall it using Firefox's uninstaller?

Double click My Computer.
Double click Program Files.
Double click the Mozilla Firefox folder.
Double click the uninstall folder.
Double click uninstall.exe.

Now delete the Mozilla Firefox folder from Program Files.
Set windows to show hidden files,
How to see hidden files in Windows
Then navigate to:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox
Delete the Firefox folder.

All traces of Firefox should now be removed.

If you're having conflicts with IE and Firefox, there are other problems besides Firefox.
I've never heard of the two conflicting.

Have you updated, and run your antivirus?
Have you done any online virus scans?
Have you run any Spyware/Malware programs?
What Spyware/Malware programs do you use?
Prior to installing Firefox, what were the exact error messages you were receiving?

Have you tried a repair of Internet Explorer?

Thanks for your reply...

Had already done steps 1-5. At the uninstall.exe, hour glass worked 5-10 seconds, left and nothing happened. Tried this several times.

All anti-virus, malware and spyware programs are up to date.

I've been all over the net trying to find solutions only to find this program is a holy nightmare to get rid of.

I get "This program (Internet Explorer) has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" even more since I installed Mozilla/FF.

What made things even worse after installing FF was that at one of my game sites it made me install Java Runtime and things really went to h*ll then!!

And have not tried an IE repair.
Cinoreah
Ok....it seems as if this thing is embedded and is not going anywhere, so I defaulted back to IE and it can just sit there and entertain itself.

But tg1911, I sincerely do appreciate the help. Thank you.... smile.gif
tg1911
It does seem like a corrupt install of Firefox.
Have you tried to install Firefox again (possibly repairing any damaged files), and then try to uninstall?
Cinoreah
No, at this point I think I'll just let sleeping dogs lie. That thing caused me enough grief yesterday to last me awhile. wacko.gif smile.gif

I'm still getting IE illegal operation messages and when I went to repair I got this message:

"Internet Explorer cannot be repaired due to the following errors:

File SCRRUN.DLL is missing."

What to do now?

Thanks

Cin
buddy215
found this site on the web where you can download that file.

www.groovyweb.uklinux.net/?page_name=dll%20files%20download&category=files
Cinoreah
Have been gone and haven't addressed this problem until now.

When I went to download scrrun and unzipped it, it said this file already exists and asked if I want to overwrite it. That scared me so I didn't do anything. Do I understand that scrrun and Runtime are connected? When I do a run it says both are missing. What the heck do I do? I sure am tired of the illegal op message.

TIA

Hay there, If you have the install disk this might help
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/129605/
it's been at least 4 years since I used it last and I'm not going to pretend that I remember any of it (sorry) . That or reinstall the scrrun.dll and when it asks if you want to overwrite the file say yes?(some sort of backup first would be a very good idea)

A local PC tech told me to reinstall IE. Should I do this? This is freaking me out.....I know it probably shouldn't but it is.

kinda up to you, do you have broadband? if not thats a long download for dialup.
if I recall the install is a two part thing.
do you have 98 or ME?

Hay There, If you've been talking to a tech , then should probably give him a shot at it, other wise here's a link to help you delete Firefox and then you can try to re-install it (after a scandisk and defrag session)
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox
if reinstalling ie don't work, at least you can tell him you tried. also if you have the install disk for your win98 you should be able to pull the file you need off it with the SFC (system file checker)
Cinoreah
The IE reinstall didn't change anything, but then I was told to put in the disk and do as exactly as you said here no one. Guess Ill try that. When I get the nerve to try it, I'll let you know how it comes out. Thanks for your help. smile.gif

When errors are popping up like that, I always suggest doing a hijackthis log in the forum... besides it's a nice way to clean up stuff as well. Oh, and I think you should try to go back and reinstall firefox as someone had earlier suggested, but I think it's probably viral.
Enthusiast
The Firefox installation should not have given you any problems but it will require JAVA for many websites to work. (It does support W98)

You still need IE for Windows Updates though.

Do you have all the available Windows Updates for your op system?

I would suggest a HJT log at this point.

scrrun.dll

scrrun.dll - Here is the scoop on Microsoft Script Runtime Library as it pertains to computer network security. The big question: what is scrrun.dll and is it spyware, a trojan and if so, how do I get rid of Microsoft Script Runtime Library?
scrrun.dll (Microsoft Script Runtime Library) - Details

The file scrrun.dll, is used by windows when running scripts such as those written with JScript or VBScript. If scrrun.dll is unavailable, windows will not be able to execute scripts. If you do not use any scripting on your computer you may be able to remove this file.

scrrun.dll is flagged as a system process and does not appear to be a security risk. However, removing Microsoft Script Runtime Library may adversly impact your system.

The Spy Bot database currently registers scrrun.dll to Microsoft.

This is part of Microsoft Windows.

scrrun.dll is related to jscript.dll, pdm.dll, selfcert.exe, vbscript.dll.

Whenever you have a concern about a file like scrrun.dll, feel free to visit our free spyware removal page to help verify your file is not a security risk.

The Spy Bot database is updated often, but inaccuracies may still exist, often caused by viruses named after valid files such as Microsoft Script Runtime Library. Always verify your results just to play it safe.

(If scrrun.dll is missing you have a problem with your Windows installation)
Cinoreah
I was able to get scrrun back in place, went to the auditmyPC as suggested. The #s in the box there remained the same after I was told to close browser and return to the page to see if they changed.

Guess I should try the hijack feature? Can you point me to that please?

I am sooooooooooooo confused these days. I feel like such an idiot. sad.gif axesmiley.png

Hay there
sorry to hear, I have switched to a Linux box ( got tired of those kind of problems as well) so I'm flying blind as far as trying to remember where or how to do alot of the ms voodoo. I really think you should try to re-install Firefox or Opera after a good cleaning (if possible)Did you try to reinstall the scrrun dll ? the link below sounds like he had the same problems as you
http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/archiv...hp/t-40501.html
You'll probably want to give the HJT a shot too. if you get it all clean you might want to read up on this as well.http://www.grc.com/su-fixit.htm , there is some good reading before that as well. seeing how M$ no longer supports Win98se you will need all the hardening you can get if you want to keep it "healthy". if you follow thru and get it right you should be as safe as you can get with win98 . Anti-Virus and a couple or three good Anti-Malware cleaners would be imperative. I had mostly fond memories of 98, quit using it because of hardware problems (it was 8 years old) have read far too much on xp to ever consider it, and vista sounds even worse, but to each his own.
there is always the Linux option (or Mac), you can get a decent set up (like Xandros or Linspire) preinstalled for 300-400 dollars. or any number of other Live CDs for free to install on yours.
Hope you get it all sorted out easily enough. smile.gif It's enough to confuse any one wink.gif

I are a few minutes late it looks crazy.gif

Hi Cinoreah,

I've split your log into a topic of it's own in the logs forum. It can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic66111.html

We do that so you don't get unauthorized and thus possibly dangerous advice. I'm going to go ahead and answer it as I don't think there is much wrong there, but want to try a few things. Then we can come back to this thread when we are sure it isn't a malware problem.
