why are socket 939 mobos dying out?is there something wrong with them?

I think what is happening is that the AM2 is getting the attention for the moment, but it looks like the only real difference in performance is that the AM2 will use DDR2. I wouldn't give up on the 939 just yet, especially now the AMD has made large price cuts in their CPUs.

Socket 939 rocks. I just did my first build with an ASUS A8N-SLI and its rock-steady and fast as lightning. Not even a hiccup as I load new programs, updated drivers, etc. From power-on until fully booted is running about 20 seconds.

Don't know why your local retailer quit carrying them, except maybe their vendor bought a bunch of newer format boards that need to get sold. Such is the world of marketing. Buy a 939 mobo with an AMD processor online from Newegg or Tigerdirect and you won't be sorry.
