As for Harry Potter I really haven't found many childrens books that don't poke at something or other as that is how they capture the interest of the reader and thus make millions of $.
Much like Aesops Fables of days gone by, much like how the Grinch stole Christmas!!!!!!
Reading books are for pleasure and learning and thus that is why it is important that parents spend the time with their children and select books and how they help their children when their peer group at school are reading a specific title.
Our teachers up here are excellent in providing guidance and lead many "after read" workshops on the books. (response to cowsmadd3 comment)
