A new tutorial titled Using GMail as an Online Hard Drive with Gmail Drive was added by BleepingComputer.com. Please use this topic to discuss any aspect of this tutorial.

A brief excerpt of the tutorial can be found here:

As many of you know, Gmail is Google's free web mail service that gives you 2+ Gigs of free storage for your email and attachments. Now that is a lot of storage; actually more storage than most people really need. So what can we
do with all that extra storage you may be wondering? What if I told you that we could use all this extra storage to act as an online hard drive for you to store files?

Thanks to a great program by the folks over at http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm
you can create a virtual drive in Windows Explorer or under My Computer that allows you to store files directly into your Gmail account. When you install this program, it will create a shell extension that links directly to your Gmail
account. To use it you just have to open the Gmail Drive under My Computer or Windows Explorer, enter your logon credentials, and start dragging files into and out of the Gmail Drive. Simple as that.

This something that interests you? Then lets get started.

We hope you find this tutorial helpful.

I have one question before i try out GMail Drive. Does it uninstall nicely? Is there an uninstaller in Add/Remove or other normal locaions for a program? Or are there other measures that need to be taken because it is a shell extension and virtual drive?

Not a whole lot of this type info on the website. For any of the programs listed. I guess that's because they all admit to being in the experimental or beta stages.

Once again, a very nice tutorial. thumbup2.gif

Yes you can uninstall all of them.

Are you also able to store files over 10MB in this gmail drive. This is not possible with gmail itself (max 10MB).

10MB is the limit for the Gmail Drive at this time.

But the tutorial noted does provide two alternatives - RoamDrive and Gspace - both break the larger files into smaller sections.

Bear in mind that anything stored on GMail exists forever somewhere on their servers, so be careful about storing sensitive information.

thumbup.gif Good day to everyone.

I have some questions regading gmail.

Is it possible to save a file that you want to download from an internet download site like RAPIDSHARE and directly download it to your gmail virtual harddrive?

If yes, can you leave your computer disconnected from the internet ,but still the connection between the download site and your gmail harddrive continue the download process until the file you are downloading
is finished?

Is there a software that can help make this scenario possible?

If not, does it mean you have to download the file first from RAPIDSHARE to your PC harddrive and then
upload it to gmail harddrive?
Grinler
It does not appear that you can download directly to the gmail drive. So yes you would download to the computer and then upload to gmail.

I DL'd gmaildrive and Gspace, and everything seems to be working as expected, except for one thing. The reason Im interested in these programs is becasue i have a 200 mb video id like to save in my gmail account, but for some reason when I go to my videos in gspace, that video is there. I only have 3 other videos on my computer, and i can see those, but the one i want to upload is not there. what could be causing this?
Thanks.

EDIT- since I could not find the video through gspace, I tried right-clicking -> send to gmail drive, and I got this message:

An error occured: Unable to create file.
System Error Message: The connection with the server was terminated abnormally.

Hi there!

I also have the GMAIL drive, but recently, when I double click on the icon in "my computer" I don't see any files, whereas I used to be able to. What's going on?

Just posting to let everyone that Gmail's limit is now no files over 20MB in size.
