Hi just done my first scan with AVG free.

I had some Word docs infected with W97M.Marker. AVG kindly 'healed' these files for me.

But it appears "healed" means deleted! Is it possible to restore them?

Or at the least: can I print a report of the test results?

The information given on the free forum and documentation seems light on!

Ta for any help.

See if the files are still in the Virus Vault.
If so, you should be able to use the toolbars above the list to restore any file to disk, or at least print the contents. "The object status column "S" indicates if the file is still infected. The object type "T" column indicates if the object was moved to the Vault or if it is a back-up before virus removal. The other columns show the virus name, the path to the original location of the object, the date and time that the virus was detected or moved to the Virus Vault, the name of the infected file and the file size."
Let us know if this helps.

Hi John
Thanks for replying. No, the files aren't in the vault.
I have since worked out how to print a report. The path of my docs (Word) are in the report. But the docs are no longer where they used to be.
Interestingly, my report tells me 157 were healed, 2 deleted, 1 infected. The 1 infected file is in the vault (i'm not to game to do anything with it just yet!) But there is no record of the where the 2 deleted files went either!

To learn more about AVG, you might want to read How to Install, Configure, and Use AVG.

If they are not in the Virus Vault, it is very unlikely that you will be able to restore them. You might try a WindowsExplorer search for all .doc files if you have not already done so.

Hi John

The docs are not showing up on explore.

I have just tried to undelete them with an undelete utility (Disk Investigator - I just happened to have it.) But I was told the clusters couldn't be undeleted becuase they are in use by another programme. So something's got them and won't let go!!

Thanks quietman7 for the link. However, it won't open in Adobe for me. (I don't seem to be having much luck on this at the moment!)

Try using the undelete utility in safe mode, and be sure AVG is disabled temporarily.

If you have XP have you tried a system restore back to a time before AVG "fixed" them ?

Can't recall basementgeek if I did a restore as you've suggested. (I've tried so many things!!)

As it's turned out I remembered, and found, some backups of the Word docs (As zip disk files!! They are old!) While it hasn't been essential to recover them, I didn't wnat to necessarily lose them.

So I think I'll quite while I'm ahead! And maybe investigate more how to use AVG - although it and I don't seem to have a good relationship going here!

Ta.
