My (kind of

) new laptop has an infrared port on it. I'm curious as to what uses this thing has. Can I use it to control my TV and DVD player? Can it network with other infrared equipped computers? Should I just disable the darned thing altogether?

Mostly the IR port on a computer is used with IR enabled printers and some remotes for powerpoint presentations.
