I would like to know how to do a clean install of a new operating system software windows2000 professional I have an IBM computer thats about 8 years old, Aptiva E Series 500 AMD-K6-2/400 processor. windows 98 installed right now.

If you have the W2k CD with the proper product code it should be easy.
I like to do a wipe of the drive so that I have a clean slate to start with, you can download a free trial of Wipe Drive here. After the hdd is wiped boot from the CD and follow the prompts to partition, format, and install the operating system.
