Can someone tell me if new DVD-RW drives need to use S/PDIF connectors for newer mobos? I'm not too familiar with the function of the S/PDIF connection.

As long as you have an IDE channel open you should have what you need. There is no real need to have a faster connection. The CD\DVD will be you limiting factor.
