Hiya, smile.gif
I have had a DVD player connected to my computer for about a year now but only used it for playing CD's and it has been working fine. I have just had a DVD made with some MP3 files on it and my DVD doesn't seem to recognise that a disk is even inserted in the drive.

The light on the front just flashes on and off for a while and then goes out and thats it. I tried the DVD in player DVD player which is hooked up to my video and I could read all the files on the disc.

What am I doing wrong? I have tried installing some drivers from driverguide but nothing has changed. The DVD player is a SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-612S

Thanks in advance

have you cleaned it? Not by hand a disk cleaner. Never touch the eye! Will it still read other disks? And or dvds?
contwo
yeah it's reading the CD's fine...I've never used it to play DVD's before.

Thanks

Maybe you do not have the DVD player installed. Take a look at the CD/DVDs that it came with. There should be a DVD player application on the discs.

You said that it does not recognize DVD discs-its like it does not even see it, right? Try this out. Hold Shift on the keyboard, when you close the DVD drive with a DVD disc. After it does its initial loading (if it does it at all), then click START -> My Computer -> right-click your DVD drive (usually d:), and select explore. Does it read the information then?

Hi Jason,
No it doesn't even recognise that there is a disk in the drive. I got the DVD drive off a friend, he didn't give me any additional disks. I asked him whether I needed to install any software and he said it should just work. So if I do need software for it is there anywhere I can get it from?

Thanks again

I found a site that has many different players to chose from, and all of them are free. A few of them may have limited functions, but at least you can see if they would work for you.

Since I have not personally used any of these, please take this special step, prior to installing. Make a new restore point, and restart your computer and install the application in Safe Mode. Reboot the computer in normal mode, and see if you can read DVDs then. If one of them does not work, uninstall it in Safe Mode and try another one. If for some reason, one of them does not uninstall properly, use a restore point to revert your computer back.

It may seem like a lot of work just to get a DVD player to work properly. Something tells me that one of your codecs are messed up. One of these may end up putting the necessary files on your computer.

I shudder to think that a reinstall of the driver may be needed, but lets do that as a last resort cool.gif

Thanks for the reply Jason,
One thing I'd like to know is can I create a restrore point in win200o prof? I thought only WinME and XP had the system restore feature. I'll have a look at the link you have provided but won't install anything until you get back to me about this. Thanks

Hi again,
I think i sorted the system restore situation. I backed up the "system state data" is this correct?

Ahhhh-that probably why it would not work. I thought you had XP. After reviewing your post, I never did ask you.

You would think that having 2000 would not make a difference, but it really does. Some people believe that 2K is more of a business OS (Operating System). I may not share the same belief, but I can tell you that it does differ from XP.

Yep, for 2K that is it.

I think you may have to install the driver, and then try out the other programs that i mentioned.

I found this driver specifically for the DVD model number and 2K. Again, install it in Safe Mode, and restart your computer. Before you install any of the other applications, try it out with just the driver installed. If it does not work, then install the other (programs) one at a time with the directions mentioned before.

Hi Jason,
Thats the driver i already have installed so i will install the software in Safe Mode and try it out and then let yuo know how I get on.

Thanks again for your help smile.gif

Hi Jason,
I installed some software but nothing has happened. I think it's a driver problem because when I put any DVD in the drive it isn't recognising that a DVD disc is even present. I looked at the driver details for the DVD player and got this:

C:\WINNT\system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
C:\WINNT\system32\DRIVERS\redbook.sys
C:\WINNT\system32\storprop.dll

It says these are Microsft drivers dated 14/11/1999 so it looks like the other drivers (the one you suggested which i thought I'd already installed) havent been installed. I think I installed them properly it created a folder on my C:\ drive and has placed some files in it but it doesn't look like I have. There was one problem with the installation at the end when it asked me did I want to reboot it didn't respond when I clicked enter so I had to reboot manually BUT it did say "The installation was successful". I dunno whether this is significant.

There is another potential problem ...when i initially installed the new drivers I didn't know about creating a restore point or installing in safe mode and so I just installed them...ooops. It asks when installing if it can write something to the Autoexec.bat and config.sys or did I want to do it manually and as I didn't have a clue how to do it manually I let the program do it. The whole way that this program installed the drivers was new to me.

I hope this all make sense to you...help! wacko.gif

Thanks again

It looks like everything is going to be finished soon. Just hang in there, and we will get you working again.

Go ahead to reboot the computer in Safe Mode and re-install the drivers there. If it says that they are already installed, do you want to continue-click yes.

While you are in Safe Mode, install one of the DVD players that was mentioned in the other link. I would start off with Cliprex DVD Player Professional.

Reboot the computer normally, and see if you can read the DVD discs then.

Although it is highly unlikely, it is possible that the DVD portion of the hardware does not work. I will look at every fix before I have you run a test to confirm that.

Hi again Jason,
sorry for the delay I was out yesterday. I tried what u said but i am in exactly the same situation as in the last email. I have tried to install the drivers but I'm not sure whether I'm doing it correctly because the Windows drivers mentioned in the previous message are still there. I normally don't have a problem installing drivers but this installation is different. I am extracting the files from the zip into a folder and then clicking on the Install.exe file. This is then writing something to the Autoexec.bat and config.sys files and then creating a folder on my c:\ drive called CDROMDRV. In this folder are two files:

MSCDEX.EXE
ATAPICD.SYS

I have double clicked on the MSCDEX.EXE file to run it and thats it..what else can I do. When I look in driver details it's the same as my previous message. I reckon I just need to install these other drivers somehow and then it will probably work.

What do you think Jason? wacko.gif

I would like for you to d/l Everest Home from here(on this screen you can chose the self-extracting EXE file or ZIP file).

This program will tell you everything about your computer. What drivers are installed and the hardware that it sees.

Take a look at what the report sees. You will find a flood of information. I would like for you to click report ->report wizard -> next -> custom selection -> next -> and have a check by Everest report, computer, (click the + next to computer)and summary only. Uncheck all the other boxes. Click Next to continue. Chose Plain text for the report and finally click finish. copy this report and paste it in a new message for me please.

Wow what a programme that is!

Here u go Jason,

I am looking at your report now. As far as I can tell, Windows knows that the DVD drive is there. You may have to post a different report...one moment please.
JEservices
I would like for you to post another report, checking off the following for it:

Computer heading blank

Motherboard heading, put a check by motherboard, and BIOS

Operating System heading, put a check by Processes, System Drivers, and Services

Server and Display headings blank

Multimedia heading, place a check by video codecs only

Storage heading, place a check by ASPI only

The remainder of the headings can be omitted for the report.

Out of curiosity, are you running this computer as a server?

There an entry that I need a little more time on:

00 07 00 Host Adapter IDECHNDR ??

From what I know about this, it is a host adapter for your IDE channel (duh, right tongue.gif ). The part that I do not like is the ? though. I know I have seen this somewhere before, but I just cant put my finger on it.

If you do not hear back from me by the end of the day, reply to this again with the word bump. It will bring it back to my new messages.

Hi Jason,
I use the Internet Information Services 5.0 only to check my ASP code on my computer when creating web pages.

The recommendations that I have been offered for your situation talks about opening your computer up.

How do you feel about proceeding with this?

I will be more then happy to walk you through all the steps.

Hi Jason,
I don't have a problem opening up my computer. Do you know what the problem is related to?
Thanks

Hello, I have close to the same problem so i'll just save space and post it here.

I have a 2 going on 3 year old computer. I don't remember if it was much of a problem when we first bought the computer, but its a real big problem now. I have two cd drives, one is a regular and the other is a cd-r burner. The problem is close to the thread starter's.

What usually happens is that i'll put a cd in (usually the non-burner) and it wont read it, i'll let it sit for a little bit and it still wont read it, then i'll eject and close the tray and it'll read the cd after that (sometimes it'll take a few times of opening and closing the tray for it to read the cd). Its been like this for both drives for awhile, now I'm at the point where the burner isn't reading anything at all. Its really making me mad. Would anybody have any idea why both drives would have that problem and why the burner doesn't want to read anything anymore?

i'm getting close to the point where i'm going to take a burner from a (going on) 8 year old computer and putting it in this one to see if it'll work.

thanks

-edit, i just downloaded and i'm about to install an update for the burner software but i doubt that would help.

All of your software is working properly. The only alternative is the hardware is going out.

A DVD player uses a smaller laser for the DVD discs. These discs are well over 7 times the compression as a CD, but hold the same size. Also, CDs have error correction on the disk. This is usually just copies of the same data, but it explains the "anti-skip" mechanisms in personal CD players. It also explains why you can read a CD, but not a DVD. From everything that I have read from your reports, it seems like there is a problem with your laser. The best option would be to replace it. They are inexpensive, and during the holidays, you could probably get a fast DVD burner for under $80.

I know that was not the opinion that you was looking for, but I do have an option. Let's just say that it is the laser, but you do not want to replace it. You are happy with it, and you do not want to have to go through all the trouble in purchasing new hardware. This is completely understandable. This is where I was referring to you opening up your computer. You can go to an electronics store and ask for an external hard drive kit. This box will enable you to hook up any internal HD, and use it outside your computer. Now you may be thinking-why would I want that, when there is nothing wrong with my hard drive? The reason is because most of them (just look on the box), will be good for internal CD/DVD drives also. Kinda nifty, huh dry.gif ? The box will require you to have a seperate outlet plug, and a free USB or Firewire port. Ok, so you place your internal DVD drive on the outside of your computer, and it should work, right? Not exactly. It is possible that the laser eye is just slightly off, and may be wearing in the track, inside the player. If this is the case, then you need to get the weight off of it by rotating the drive kit. Stand it on its side, or even upside down, and it will not be running into the worn groove. It sounds crazy, yes; however, it is the same trick that people use to keep their Playstation working right, when they start having problems with them smile.gif The kit is really just so that you do not have to rotate your entire computer. These will run under $40.

Before you do this, you will need to remove your current DVD drive. I will be more then happy to help, but I will need some more time. This is a delicate process, and would prefer that I list all the steps in another message sometime tomorrow evening.

Thanks Jason,
I will probably just buy another DVD player after Xmas. One thing still confuses me though. It concerns the drivers currently installed for my DVD player:

C:\WINNT\system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
C:\WINNT\system32\DRIVERS\redbook.sys
C:\WINNT\system32\storprop.dll

These drivers are the microsoft drivers installed when I first connected up my DVD player. Do these drivers work the player as a DVD/CD player or just as a CD player? As I said before I attempted to install the other drivers you directed me to the drivers did not replace the drivers above. If these drivers aren't suitable for the DVD part of the player then that could be the reason it still won't work. Do you see my point?

Thanks again Jason

I understand your question. Some of the drivers are there so that the DVD drive can work as a CD as well. Yes, it sounds odd that it would be required, but I believe it is more of a compatibility issue for when you are using it as a CD player. Confused yet blink.gif I know I would be if I did not understand it. To top it all off, the file does not often tell your which drive it is referring to. How about we define each one.

cdrom.sys-It is universal CD-ROM driver for Windows. It can be used for a DVD drive to allow it to read CDs.

redbook.sys-"The Redbook system driver (redbook.sys) is the KS filter that manages the rendering of CD
digital audio. The Redbook driver is a client of the SysAudio system driver. The system routes
CD digital audio through the file system to the Redbook driver and then to the SysAudio driver.
The CD digital audio is rendered on the preferred wave output device (as set in the Multimedia
property pages in Control Panel)".~source http://www.greatis.com/appdata/necessary.htm

storprop.dll-Property Pages for Storage Devices, Microsoft® Windows® Operating System SP2.~source http://www.e-systems.ro/download-dll/storprop.dll/

I know that probably did not explain it very good, but from everything that I see, all of them are required for your DVD player.

would trying a cleaner to clean the insides work? That could be the case for my cd's not being read.
