Have you tried to use a different USB port?
Have you tried to turn the computer on, with it already in?

Initially, I would think that you may need to repair XP. It can be done with your original CDs, but it may be a bit overboard for this problem. There would be a possibility that you could lose some of your personal data, and may even have to update some drivers that would revert back to original settings. If Im not mistaken, you can not use the repair function of XP to repair only a specific portion (relating to USB).
If you can not get your reader to work, maybe it is not the port. Do any of your other USB devices work properly? If any device works in the port, then I would think that the reader is defective.
To determine if it is the port, tell me what you get when you do this:
click START->Control Panel->System->hardware tab->Device Manager->and + next to Universal Serial Bus controllers. You do not have to list all of the different items that you have listed, but if you have a ? or ! by one of them, let me know.

There is no ? or anything else beside the port and they all show they are working properly. As well when I plug the device that particular port shows the device is working properly.I have tried the reader on other computers and it works the way it is supposed to.

Although USB devices usually do not need any drivers, have you tried the install disk that came with the device?

Yes tried the disc and still nothing. As you say likely I will have to do something with Windows itself. You've been patient.Thank you.

The only thing that I can find, is the Windows SP1 has it as part of the d/l. It is my understanding that SP2 has everything that SP1 has. Have you recently upgraded to SP2?
