Has anyone ever built one of these??

I was thinking of building one of these and putting windows media center edition on it, with a 7inch Touch Screen...

Would like wireless internet, and all the ports you can find on a normal pc...

Is it possible to have a PCMIA slot on a desktop?

I had no idea what this topic was about so I oppened it and still didnt know.
Im guessing its not a spelling error but a computer system for a car.

I would check that site out and just search on google for the word.

Well im not real sure about this. What it is for one and why in H3!! you would want to do it for two.

Why not just use a laptop wired into the Audio/Visual system form what the link said thats pretty much what they are doing. Except they were using Desktop Parts and I can only assume a good stable power converter.

The cost of the Converter alone ( a good extemely stable converter) justifies the laptop's extra cost over a desktop. The touch screen would run you about as much as a descent in dash DVD system w/ 2 extra 9 in LCD Monitors for the backseat. Not to mention all the fabrication work that would go into making it accessable from the driver/passenger seats.

It wouldnt be worth it. A laptop wired in would be more accessable, movable (wire it to a set of RCA or A/V jacks), practical, and more stable.

Ok thanks for the suggestion... Now where would I be able to mount the laptop to be able to use it and view the screen from the driver seat without really interfering with the passenger?? Or do I just stow the laptop under a seat or something and only use the dvd system screen and a Wireless Keyboard??

I am thinking about buying myself a van and take out the 3rd row... It would be perfect for me and 3 friends to head out to lan parties together (all the good ones are a minimum 3hours drive (Quebec City) and the best ones are 5 hours (Montreal))

And it would be awsome to install a wireless router inside so my friends can do some last minute praticing before the LAN with the laptops... If I want to plug in 3 laptops plus the cars/my laptop computer and a wireless router and a few other things (cell phones ect...) should I but in a seperate power supply such as an extra battery or something??

If you dont want to restart your car ever hour or so(with 3 laptops maybe more often) then you might want to add a extra battery.

Well Put smile.gif

I suppose you could put in a router for some kinda weird "intracar network" but,
please don't try to run it while driving down the road. you could even connect it to
your mobile phone i guess but perfomance would be less that stellar I'm sure.
also if you want to save alot of money tell your friends to bring(buy) there own
dang laptops as this would save you 1500-4500+ in money
and a good isolated deep cycle battery setup would be a very good idea as well
for a non-gaming, non-windoze car-puter there is this

looks like to much work to me no matter how you slice it.
Klinkaroo
Yeah my friends would bring there own laptops but why would I not be able to run the router while driving down the road...

And how would I hook up the batteries in the car.

Hay there Klinkaroo
For starters you could check out a RV's electical sys.
if you want to power a router +X number of laptops
you would need a lot of "stuff" to do it right I'd think.
(blood ,sweat, tears, a ample supply of swear words)
converters, beer, isolater , a good deep cycle battery
a min.4ga feed wire, more beer, fuse blocks, possibly
a higher output alternator . check out some car audio
shops that do "insane" wattage as the power requirements
would'nt be that different.(I think they use capacitors)
(you could do that while getting more beer tongue.gif )

it's not that you couldn't do it while driving its just
that I'm one of a small percent of people apparently
that think if you're driving , thats all you need to be doing. smile.gif
Klinkaroo
I wouldn't be playing only my friends (and with headphones).

Yeah thanks for the info think I am going to start shopping.

I am only 16 tongue.gif

I just thought of another option. A Generator
