Hello All!!

I can't seem to open a lot of the images that I want to. When I double-click on an icon for an image that I want to open I get an error message, and the image won't open. I've tried opening it with Paint, Gimp, IE, and Irfanview. The images that I'm having trouble with were received in email from a few groups I belong to. This next image is also from Irfanview. It appears after I click 'Yes' in the message that appears the first time I try to open it in Irfanview which I showed in the image before this one. (Notice that the file has been changed to art here by Irfanview, but it still won't open.)

Any ideas on what I can do? Also, can someone explain the reason some people save images in JPEG, BMP, or ART? I think I was already told the when they are save GIF it's because they are animated, though I've received a bunch that were not animated yet were still sent as a GIF file.

.art files are proprietory graphics files---very compressed--- from our great friends at AOL; unfortunately, they are not readable outside the AOL world.
You can try completely renaming these files and changing file type to .jpeg.
I wasn't able to find an application that could pull up .art files and then allow you to save as something else more portable.

I used to convert .art to other formats when using AOL.
AOL is bad.
I'll never use it again.

I can probably still do it.

Pictures are saved as a .jpg or .bmp so that they are compressed and can be easily emailed, viewed on the internet, viewed on nearly all computers (even slow ones) etc. etc. The most common (and perhaps easiest to use) is .jpg (.jpeg). Reason being is that when it's saved, it's "compressed", and is so "universal" that it can opened in nearly any program. Personally, I'd recommend using .jpg all the time, as it's easier to email/open etc. Also, if you save it at a max resolution (10 or 12 depending on the program you use), it's near lossless, meaning it'll still look great, and not appear all pixelated and jagged looking.
