AVG-Free 6 will no longer receive updates. You need to upgrade to AVG-Free 7.Quite painless, the installer removes the old and installs the new.

Raw is correct. Here some information for you to check out. 7 was released on 10 NOV 2004
http://www.dozleng.com/updates/index.php?a...nt&eventid=9009December 31 is the last day of support.
http://www.dozleng.com/updates/index.php?a...nt&eventid=8586Edit - We recomending sticking with 6 for a little while longer to make sure all the bugs are out. They are still releasing Virus DEF updates for the product.

I reported on this some time ago ("avg6 users please note"). AVG7 is very much like AVG6; HOWEVER, configuring the Email scanning function to either Mozilla, Firefox, or OE is difficult---I have tried three times and have not been successful. At the present, I can receive POP Email but cannot send, unless I turn off the Email scanning function. You may want to wait a few weeks, if POP Email is important to you, until the situation clarifies itself.
Cheers,
John

Also AVG7 killed my home machine. Startupts took 5 minutes, compared to 30 seconds. Took about 1 minute till i got control of my computer after logging in.

I didn't have any noticeable change in boot times compared with AVG6, though I don't have it scan anything on start up.
I have stopped recommending AVG7 with any enthusiasm.

John

WOW, I can't believe the amount of bad things I'm hearing about AVG7. I had absolutely no problems upgrading. Boot-up didn't slow down, worked automatically with my Thunderbird mail client, updates have been right on.

I have experienced no problems with the AVG7beta. In fact I still recommend it enthusiastically. Updates frequently/scan time in a few minutes/company track record/compatibility with SP2 & all recommended programs we use here/just how long was AVG6 available to the very large user base it enjoys before they decided to tweak it in an effort to modenize it ? Seems reasonable to expect withdrwn support & a few bugs in light of the favorable factors. I appreciate the advance notice and clear intentions. Kinda refreshin' considering some of the competition if ya' ask me...which ya' didn't but oh, well. It is the cornerstone of my free protection.
BTW, EdBee, I base the opinion of
QUOTE
but how does one really know if one AV is grabbing a lot of viruses as compared to another?
on these things:
- nearly two years on the PC
- three incidences of capturered viruses
- confirmed by other programs, my problems have not been virus related
- online scans do not clean up after AVG
- consistant performance, but I don't try to tweak it
- uninstalled a few times and tried others...didn't much like 'em
- during a period of fresh reload, brief one, got a virus without it surfin' carefully
- surfin' not carefully at all, still no viruses. (HJT stuff, downloadin' and visiting s#*thole sites, etc.)
so what the hey? virus protection is not my #1 concern thanks to our Czech friends IMHO. (I don't much like the ugly renditions of the virus cartoon guys, to be honest with 'ya)

In addition to testing against various on-line scans, you can check out several companies that "test" antivirus applications. While these may have hidden agendas, they do provide a comparison and sometimes a "certification." Those I have seen rate AVG quite well.
Again, you can read user opinions, both on tech boards and at sites like ZDNet Downloads. I have found AVG to be a very good defence against viruses myself, and have used it for several years. My only complaint is that I still cannot get AVG to not block me from sending Emails, and I can work around this.
Cheers,
John
