I have a 256mb jump drive plugged into a USB port. When I try to find the drive in Explorer to drag the file I need onto it,I can't locate the jump drive.

The computer has a low speed USB controller, so I can drag the file to the jump drive if I can find it...

What version of windows are you using?

When you pluged the jump drive into your computer the first time, did it say "found new hardware"? Try plugging it into a different USB port. If you're using Windows XP, it should automatically recognize it, and install it. It should show up on your computer (via windows explorer) as another drive and assign it a letter.

If you're using an older verison of windows (older than xp) you might have to install drivers for it manually for you computer to recognize it.

If you're using xp, and it won't find it, sometimes it takes a little bit for windows to "update" everything that's attached to the computer. Try right clicking on a blank part of the background near your C: drive and then click "refresh". It may or may not show up. If not, then close windows explorer and open it up again. It should be there. If not, then close and open explorer one last time. If it doesn't show up now, it may be something else.

thks. did all that... think the circuit on the motherboard may be burned. Laptop got too hot My best guess... the OS (XP) works fine, but the device drivers are gone, the hardware wiz is gone and the Network connections are gone. I know they are still on the hard drive... plugged in the jump drive and it says the USB Host Controller is there.. I just can't access it.
Tried to download a driver for it... can't access the wiz. to set it up...

HJT didn't show any strange stuff, so don't think it is virus or malware...
I'm going to take a look at the insides tomorrow... I've never done a chip repair.

Hmmm....odd. While you're in there, check to make sure that everything is plugged into the mobo correctly. If it is, and everything seems fine, I'd try reinstalling the OS (wipe the hdd before reinstalling) just as a last resort. If that doesn't work.........dunno! New mobo or comp maybe?
