blink.gif Hopefully you can help! Even more hopefully, you will tell me I am wasting your time and there is nothing to worry about!

The other things that still concern me are:

Both the 'system' and 'system idle' processes on my PC didn't have the full microsoft name for the manufacturer, like all the other Microsoft processes....weird.

Thanks heaps smile.gif
JPHarvey
Well, I think I just realised my worst night mare (an update for you) ohmy.gif - I removed SetPoint.exe and thus the "Unauthorized access logged" messages for setpoint.exe stopped, however, winlogon.exe (in \system32\) has taken it's place. Goddamn Mutha's.
Oh, here are the files they are trying to access:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe
C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\SAVScan.exe
C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\IWP\NPFMntor.exe
C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe
C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe

Man this sux. I am gathering all my software together to do a complete rebuild. Can this infect non exe files? I need to backup all my missus' music, otherwise it will be death for me!

Cheers
Grinler
What exactly is the problem you are having?
JPHarvey
Well, when I examine the Norton AV reports section and check the Alerts, I have Setpoint.exe (the actual software) trying to access my Nortons files. So I uninstalled setpoint, and winlogon.exe takes its place trying to access the files. Nortons is blocking them, but this just doesn't seem like normal activity....There was no prompt for the files to access the internet, so why the Nortons files?
This is all because I recently contracted a virus - I need to make sure that all traces are gone from the system, even if AV software can't find it....
Grinler
When you say its trying to access...what exactly is the log saying?
JPHarvey
The title for the log is Alerts, and the log itself says "Unauthorized Access logged".
In the message, it has the actor ("C:\Program Files\Logitech\Setpoint\Setpoint.exe") and the target (can't remember the exact path, but the files are all Norton AV *.exe files), it then says "Action: Unauthorized access", and "Response: Unauthorized access blocked".

So Nortons is blocking the access, but why would it be trying in the first place....?
Grinler
I really do not know.

Please run two online virus scans:

http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400#betatest

Then let us know if its working better and what the scans found.
JPHarvey
No worries...
I'll post back my results over the weekend...

Cheers smile.gif
JPHarvey
Okay, ran eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner (http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx), and got "no infection....... more to follow!
JPHarvey
Same again for Kaspersky!!??
Grinler
Do me a favor and submit the setpoint file here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php
JPHarvey
Sorry it took me so long!! I will post it now!! smile.gif
Grinler
No virus found in setpoint.exe.

Not sure why this is happening. Have you called symantec about this?
JPHarvey
Yeah, they were pretty unprofessional actually. They said that if there are no symptoms (other than what I was telling them) then there IS no problem! Unbelievable! Then he says just to make sure my definitions are up to date, and that was it!
I also had winlogon.exe and msiexec.exe accessing the same files, and as such rang microsoft. They said that winlogon works "when you logon" and as such needs to work WITH symantec...so I posed the question "why is nortons blocking it then?". So he cracked it and said it was a symantec problem!!

I also rang & emailed Logitech, and their first reply said to do the stuff that I had said that I already did in the email I sent them!! Their next email said that they can't help and I should call them instead. The guy on the phone had no clue, which, as it is, leaves me with no clue!??

What a crazy world. Well thanx for your help grinler, this may just be one of those things for which there is no answer!!

smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif
Grinler
Lets try one last thing. You can also try reinstall norton and see if that helps. last but not least...you can try a different AV software. A lot of people find avast or avg to be much better than symantec. And they are both free.

To use RootKit Revealer please make sure you are logged in as an Administrator to the computer.
  1. Please download and unzip Rootkit Revealer to your desktop.
  2. Please leave the defaults set as they are to:
    • Hide NTFS Metadata Files: this option is on by default
    • Scan Registry: this option is on by default.
  3. Launch rootkit revealer on the system and press the Scan button.
RootkitRevealer scans the system reporting its actions in a status area at the bottom of its window and noting discrepancies in the output list. It may take a long time please disconnect from the internet and leave the PC to be scanned until it is finished.
  4. The log can be very large please edit out the items in the following folders in the log : C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT and C:\System Volume Information, if in the log, before posting it.
  5. Please post the balance of the log here in this thread using Add Reply (please double check that it has all been posted as it may be too long for one post)]
Then Download and Save blacklite to your desktop.
F-Secure Blacklight: http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
leave [X]scan through windows explorer checked,
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose for rename yet! I want to see the log first, because legit items can also be present there... like "wbemtest.exe"
There must be also a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
Copy and paste this log along with the rootkit revealer log.
JPHarvey
Alrighty, I'll get onto that, and then post back the info you requested....

Thanx again - Justin
JPHarvey
Sorry Grinler, I still haven't done that stuff - I am so flat out at work at the moment (these are all posts from my work PC). I plan to do it next week when the course I am instructing on leaves.
Anyway, the reason I am making an interim post is I was just speaking to my missus, and she told me while she was surfing the net today, she did a search and it came up with a web page (unrelated to the search) saying to meet topless women at Glenfield (which is near where we live in Australia). It doesn't do that stuff on my login however - it did something similar to her before I reformatted the PC. I am positive she doesn't look at porn - neither of us do. So is this a virus (unrelated to setpoint.exe?) or just a harmless cookie? I deleted all the cookies last time it happened, but to no avail.... any info you have would be lovely!
JPHarvey
Hey a question related to this - both our logins are administrator logins - will this affect anything I do to the PC, or not really?
JPHarvey
And another one - sorry....
I looked at the logs I posted right back at the start of the thread. Looking at the running process in teh Adaware Log, why all do but smss.exe, csrss.exe and winlogon.exe have FileVersion, ProductVersion, ProductName, CompanyName, FileDescription, InternalName, and LegalCopyright? I thought winlogon.exe was a proper Windows Program?
Grinler
Good questions..but I do not know the answer. The good news is that all of those files are legit so you do not need to be concerned about them.

Lets get those other steps completed and then post a new hjt log with it.
JPHarvey
Sweet - no worries! The HJT log is done in safe mode right?
Grinler
No do the hijackthis in normal mode
JPHarvey
Again Grinler, my apologies for taking my sweet time! sad.gif
Here is the log from the Rootkit Revealer. It is actually pretty short:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\RNG\Seed 20/05/2006 9:44 AM 80 bytes Data mismatch between Windows API and raw hive data.
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\47366543D4C6F9149A0EB812AC09F58D\Usage\Main 20/05/2006 9:39 AM 4 bytes Data mismatch between Windows API and raw hive data.
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\20060520.005\vscanmsx.dat 20/05/2006 9:55 AM 2.02 KB Hidden from Windows API.

I will get onto the blacklight program now and post results shortly... thumbup2.gif
JPHarvey
Okay, just ran the Blacklight. I couldn't follwo all the steps because it reported that it found nothing. I guess that is a good thing, but doesn't get us any closer to solving this mystery....? Oh, and this is the contents of the "fsbl-20060520001603" text document:

05/20/06 10:16:03 [Info]: BlackLight Engine 1.0.36 initialized

Anyway, I'll do the HJT log, and post it to the HJT logs site and put the link in this thread.....
JPHarvey
Woopsy! I didn't realise I was already in the HJT Logs thread!

Thank a heap Grinler, and hopefully I hear from you soon!! wink.gif
Grinler
I just do not see anything wrong here at all.
JPHarvey
I hear what you are saying. I mean, my PC isn't actually performing worse, and other than the (really weird) odd redirect to a porn website (but only on my missus login, so possibly due to her security settings at the time), and the setpoint.exe trying to access the web, there IS nothing wrong.
It's just frustrating that Logitech and Microsoft (and Nortons for that matter) can't give me an answer as to why it is happening, and say that it must be something caused by the other company! I think I will keep hassling them until I get some sort of answer.... smile.gif
Hey, thanks for your time Grinler, and sorry again for taking so long with my replies. As I said earlier too, if I do get any credible info from the manufacturers, I will be sure to pass it back to this thread...

Well set point may be trying to access the web looking for updates. It does do that. Why its trying to access a norton file, though, I have no idea. If you think we are done with this topic, shall I give my prevention speech?
JPHarvey
Yeah, let's do that.... Thanks a heap Grinler, and hopefully I won't hear from you again, unless I mess up my PC!! ;) Have a good one.

Now that your clean:

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

or

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Next,

This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet
