Can Windows ME be installed over Windows 98 or does Windows 98 have to be UNinstalled first?

With the older OSes before XP, I would probably install 98 or Windows 2000. I wouldn't really consider ME much of an upgrade... and not really worth the effort of upgrading from 98.
To answer your question...yes, you can upgrade from 98 to ME.

Upgrading isn't always a good idea. Problems from the previous operating system often make their way onto the new one. A clean install is usually best. As JCat says, ME isn't a good idea. Even a clean install of it is likely to crash frequently, in my experience. (I currently have one running and one in mothballs.)

I had a choice of reinstalling '98*Grinler or going wit W2k. W2k was a much better choice. You will have the stability of XP but be able to runwith far less resources (RAM and hard drive). It is bullit proof, except of course from malware. But what Windows platform is?

^ Win 2k is fantastic over the two.
It has great stability and yes...Far less resources!!

I believe he means that MS will no longer provide the download, update, and patches, which you will have to have in the event you need to reinstall '9x/ME.

Windows ME is the worst OS made! Stick with Windows 98 Second Edition or use Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
Izzy

Go to Windows 2000 SP4 as ComputerWhizz7 mentioned.

W2k is a wonderful OS. I is far more stable than most MS product, and in my opinion tha includes XP (Just my opinion). Whatever you do, download and burn the updates, service packs, and patches to CD\DVD in the event MS discontinues that services. That is what I hae done with everything since WindowsNT. The other plus to that is the speed of the install and update.

Yes it is a good idea to stay with windows 98. But if you want to upgrade to windows 98 it is best to reboot in dos mode and type in fdisk and delete the partition then you can install windows me. Windows ME I heard has some imunities to some virus's and stuff but I am sure that soon or later those crazy hackers are going to break through. I guess just because Me was made so badly it is harder to break through.

You can just buy a tower from a computer shop with windows they start from around $600 (Basic system 256mb ram, 80GB hard drive, 1.6Ghz processor) deending on what hardware and configs you need like ram, hard drive, processor. You would start with what you use it for, Games, Just basic Word processing and Internet. I don't know what part of the world you're in so i don't know where you would buy from cause i'm ausie. I agree with acklan, build your own as you put what you want in it.

$$$600!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can buy the works for that! Perhaps I should just give up the whole notion and buy ALL new. I just hated to have lots of money in it for a ten-year-old to be using.

$600 is cheap. i can get a whole package with printer for $799.
But if it's for a 10 year old just use the one you have. Is it going good?

Since it only has 98, it doesn't support making it wireless and where it has to be located, it needs to be wireless. ME was on it in the beginning, but it was crashing endlessly, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled 98. I just got myself (in addition to my laptop) an EMachine, flat panel monitor, speakers, photo printer, for $399 after rebates at Office Depot. Maybe I ought to just get him one, too. Then I can use the wireless adapter I bought!

If you want "How cheap can I go" cheap, here is a
Dell.
$349 USD
-$50 USD instant rebate
-$20 USD No Monitor $270 USD Total
I would pay the $10 USD for the XP CD thought.

I really wouldnt install windows ME . Indeed I would rather keep windows 98 over ME.
If your hardware supports windows XP switch to windows XP. Keep in mind that upgrade versions are cheaper but they cause a lot of trouble.

I didn't reinstall ME...I reinstalled 98. BUT I can't use my wireless adapter with it because 98 isn't compatible. I guess when the time is right, I'll buy my son a new computer....and quit trying to be a geek and get this old one fixed!!!!!!!

I also agree with Izzy,. I upgraded, with a fresh install, all of my kids computers with W2k. It requires about the same or less resources s '9X with th security of XP Pro. All of my computers are P-III. If will make that older computer more pleasent to use and maintain.
Please don't give up on being a geek. It's better than being medicated. ;)
