I was told that leaving your computer on all the time would extend the life of it as booting up is what causes the computer to get worn out , so to speak. I was also told to turn the monitor off to help save it. It made sense to me , but I now have a little problem with it. Some times when I bring it back to life the Cap Lock will be on but the light does not come on. If I hit the Cap Lock key the light goes on and the Caps turn off and the Lower case letters come on. "Sometimes" Say I want to enter the internet and I have to enter my user name and password. Sometimes it will be OKay and other times I will have to turn the Cap Lock on to turn the Caps off and then when I go to enter the paswword it will have switched. It has been doing this for about a week now and I can't figure it out. Can any of you?

Is the computer actually going into hibernate mode ? Hibernate mode is notoriously problematic and is known to do screwy things to your computer as it essentially shuts down and consumes as little power as possible. Then when you bring it back up, certain devices may not function as they were previously until you reboot. I would turn off hibernation mode alltogether and have it spin down the hard drives or the monitor instead (though that can cuase problems too)

Overall i keep my computer on all day and night. My office computer has been up for 3 weeks now without a reboot, though will prob need one tomorrow now that I said this.

I do though turn my monitor off every night

Hi Grinler,
Thanks for the info. That was about the same conclusion I had come to. I had only upgraded to Win XP about 3 months ago and really thought it was great, and then this happened. I guess I'll go back to my old routine and keep it on all day and then shut down at night. I have been doing that for years now with no problems. thumbup.gif

Thanks forletting me know about my tags. This is the first forum that I have been on that does this. How do I get rid of them?

Guess I didn't do it right. I don't know what I am doing today. Maybe I can figure it out somehow.

nekela,

Just remember to "close all Tags".

There's a "button" to the right that will do that, or you can simply type the BB code,

Hi Koan,
I am pretty dumb about these things. I tried removing it , but it didn't work , so you say type in the BB code. What is the BB code?

Neal
Scarlett
nekela I hope that this helps. smile.gif

Hi Scarlett,
I checked the BB code help , bu didn't see anything about closing tags. Above this message box it says Close all tags I thought i had tried that , but am not sure. I will try it again.

nekela,

You are not dumb by any definition of the word. Just not familar with the BB code used to post here. Take a few minutes and play with it in the "tests forum. Use the preview to see what your post will look like.

Just remember, every time you open or initiate a BB code you must close it for the coding to take effect.

Scarlett has shown you a screen shot of where to see the entire BB code for this site.

regards,
~Koan

Darn! I sure wish I was more articulate to be able to explain this system.
That's Why I'd asked others earlier on to write a tutorial about this system!!

[BB code]TEXT[/BB code]

That's about as simple as I can explain it.

Nuts!

Here is the complete tutorial on how to use Bleeping Computer Disscussion Forums.
Info. on how to post a new topic, reply to an existing one, or add a poll. It is listed near the bottom of page.

I second the vote on leaving your computer on all the time, and turning it off manually on a schedule.

I leave mine on all the time, except for one day, and just turn off the monitors when I am away for a while, or at night. On a schedule, I will restart the computer in Safe Mode, run a few cleaning programs, then leave it off for about 5 hours or overnight. Maybe the time is a little much, but I do it when I know I will not be using it for a while.

On the BB Code, maybe this will help:

To have this sentence in bold, you can do it different ways:

You can highlight the text by dragging your mouse from one end to the other, then while it is highlighted, you can click the button (B for bold), or change a setting in a drop down list (color), and it will open and close the tag for you automatically.

You can also manually type in the coding by using "[(code)]" to start and "[/(code)]" to end it.

Using either method, on your screen, it will look like this:

CODE
[bold]To have this sentence in bold[/bold]

Notice that for every tag that you have opened, you have to close them with the "[/(code)]" tag. If you think of the first one as starting the code, and the other one as ending the code, then you will understand why you need both.

Clicking Preview post will show you what it will look like before you post it. With the preview, you can make as many changes as you need before it is sent.

Thanks again Jason!
