Could anyone outline the main or noticable differences between Win ME or 98, Windows 2000 and Win XP?

Difference between XP Pro and XP Home Edition

Further: those I talk to who work in IT tell me that Windows XP does not network well with the aging NT servers. The preferred OS of choice in enterprise locally is Windows 2003 Server for the server and XP Pro for the clients. With each new operating system, things have moved forward. That said, my lady has used Windows NT to work from home, supplied by her company on a new commercial computer.

My observation of Windows NT was that it was a very plain jane operating system, and instead of bells and whistles, it had lots of commercial plugin programs, such as file viewers.

The main difference between the NT line including NT, 2000, XP and the FAT line including 95, 98, ME is that the NTFS (New Technology File System) line is a more redundant system, much stronger and less likely to lose file chains than the Fat 16 or Fat 32 systems. XP is the blending of those two lines - stability with multimedia, gaming and so on.
