Full Version: Re installing Win98 using MS-DOS

Im trying to 'repair' my father's computer from a horrific spyware/NAV/timing/who knows what experience and I finally got the safe mode desktop back after removing over 700 incidents of spyware and getting it somewhat back to normal. The only problem left is that there is an error trying to start Windows.

We keep getting-->

Error atmsys.drv Must re install Windows and it shuts down.

I re installed windows on my husband's computer (95) but my notes are unclear (cough) and I want to make sure before I totally screw up my father's

Is this correct?

cd c:\windows\options\cabs
[enter]
setup
[enter]

and the setup will start? I have other extraneous notes I cant seem to fit into any straight line. Any help would be great because I want to get over there and finish this for him so he can use the computer again.

THANKS! thumbup.gif

If you can get to safe mode click on start , then run, and type notepad c:\windows\system.ini.

Look for lines that look like this in the boot section:

QUOTE
SYSTEM.DRV=ATMSYS.DRV
ATMSYS.DRV=SYSTEM.DRV

Change that to :

QUOTE
;;SYSTEM.DRV=ATMSYS.DRV
;;ATMSYS.DRV=SYSTEM.DRV

and then add:

QUOTE
SYSTEM.DRV=SYSTEM.DRV

Now see if its working
